I have an 05 automatic with 9K miles on it. Bought the car last Fall. My first Vette! Love it too! On cold days - below 45 degrees (OK I'm in the south) I hear a rattle from the engine that increases as the rpms increase. The only time you can hear it is either at idle or just getting going and it typically goes away after 2 or 3 minutes driving time. The only time I have heard this type noise before was in 1975 I had a 1972 Chevelle that had a bad lifter but it had 80K+ miles on it. Just wondered if anyone else has had this happen and what if anything they did about it. Thanks.
the noise is very common on all LS1 and LS2 engines. I dont know what it is but have made a few speculations. Regardless of what it is, my LS1 has 68k hard miles on it without any problems.
I would assume it has something to do with the engine being cold, perhaps the pistons and cylinder liners expand at different rates and there is a little bit of space in there that contributes to the clanking. Either way, when its very cold out I let my car warm up until this sound it gone then drive. By that time you know everything is ready to go.
If anyone has any other thoughts I'd be interested to hear them. Maybe some of the automotive engineering guys can shed some light on the topic.
I'd have the dealer check it out. It might be normal but it would be a good idea to have it on record that you have a concern. By the way my 05 sounds normal under the same conditions.
