Took my car to dealership for oil change and clumking from rear. Service tech is ordering new O-ring and will call when it comes in so they can change rear end fluid. I was under the impression it only involved removing left differential cover, draining old fluid, wiping out excess, refilling with new fluid and friction additive, replacing O-ring and cover, and doing some slow figure eights; however, service tech indicated that they might need to remove the left axle to reach the cover. Sounded like she didn't really know what she was talking about. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
There is a drain plug on the differential, you do not need to remove the cover. If it is an 05 you need to use an angle allen wrench since the rear spring is in the way. On 06 and later you can reach the plug with a socket type allen wrench.
Which dealership is this? I am trying to find one around here that I can trust.
The dealership is Peltier in Lufkin, and I should clear up that it wasn't the service tech that told me this but the service advisor. I have been satisfied with work done there, but prior to this trip the service advisor I worked with was one of my former students; he since relocated to Houston, and the woman I spoke with Wednesday didn't seem to know very much.
As I stated in another thread, PIP 3559F states that the left differential cover should be removed to completely get all the old fluid out of the differential. Of all the dealers I talked with (Los Angeles area), its not being done. The drain and refill opertion is being performed by draining the old fluid through the drain plug hole. Thats how mine was done and so far the noise is gone.
