Default Exhaust/Headers questions

O.K. I'm ready to put a new exhaust on my '07 Z51 since the stock sounds awful. I plan on adding headers later (possibly as late as next year).

Before I order the exhaust I have a few questions I hope someone can help me with.

1. Is the only difference between cat-back and axle-back the X pipe? How big a difference is there between the two (sound/performance)? Will it make a difference if I have an axle-back when I order my headers?

2. Do I need to decide on which headers I'll get before I order my exhaust or will all after market exhausts bolt to all brands of headers with no modifications?
Will it make a difference if I choose long tube or short tube headers (as far as connection to exhaust is concerned)?

3. I live in Michigan and have no need of a cadillac converter. If I go without one will a spacer need to be fabricated to make up for the missing cat?

Any help with these questions would really help me out.

You can go with any aftermarket exhaust and order the headders after

And when you order the headders you can get them without cats
and thay will come with the filler piece
I have kooks 1 7/8 setp with cats

cat-back and axle-back are the same thing for the systems designed for the vette.

the mid-section is the x or h-pipe.

the stock h-pipe is 2.5", unless you replace it with a 3" section.

most brands of cat-back/axle-back will connect to the 'stock' midsection without a problem.

some headers will bolt up to the stock midsection but most folks purchase the headers and midsection (x-pipe) from the same company.

only some long tubes will bolt up to the stock midsection, short tubes aren't really worth the effort.

Cat back and axle back are sometimes used interchangeably. However some elect to go with a catback system and also buy that company's X pipe as well.

If you bought someone else's x pipe and catback/axleback system, and next year decide to go with headers, well most header systems come with their own X pipes. Which of course are designed to align with and fit their headers.

I would decide on my headers and purchase them now. I would base my axle back/cat back decision on the results of the headers.

This is a good explanation from forum member Crabman.

If you are considering one of the big three systems, KOOKS, LG Pros or American Racing, you should have no trouble hooking up to any axle back system you want, using their supplied X pipes.

Catalytic converters are federally mandated. So whether you live in Michigan or not you should still be running cats.

Most of the systems out there make provisions if you will not be using catalytic converters however by using a straight through piece where the catalytic converter would have been.

How about hedman headers? i have not tried it though, it looks like it has nice feedbacks. What do think about pacesetter exhaust? Quite curious on this exhaust.
