Default Auto transmission question.............

Looking at getting an 08 with the new LS3 and a base of 425hp with an auto...How do you like the auto, do they shift with firm shifts...ANy regrets on not going with the M6? Thanks

If you search you will find plenty on this subject. 6L80 is an excellent tranny, it's a little awkward in the paddle mode because of the delay.
This is my first personal car with an auto and I like it. However, the hardest part is taking the ribbing of owning a sports car with an automatic. Of course after all the clutch issues on my 01 Z28 and reading of all the issues on this forum with the Vette clutch, I do feel better.

My experience is great. The auto is faster than the stick unless the stick is shifted perfectly. The usual downside is in downshifting. When I downshift from 6 to 5, 5 to 4, All works fine. When downshifting from 4 to 3 the tranny goes into free wheeling mode. You have to feed some gas to get it to shift. If you keep some rpm up then it will downshift 6 thru 1 as long as the speeds are right for the gears. The shifts are then fast. When accelerating from a dead stop with the computer controlling wheel spin you get chirps in first and second. With the computer off you get wheel spin in both 1 and 2.

I've had many auto trannys over the years, built TH-350's , 700r4s,
4L60E. I have to say my A6 so far is the best of the bunch, has pretty good snappy firm shifts for being stock.

the A6 could be better IMHO much better but I hate shifting so much that I like it more than a stick--so far.

Somebody w/ an M*6 needs to jump in here, so here goes...
Good reasons to get an A6 over M6:
1. Daily driving in bad stop/go traffic (in this case, get another one w/ stick for proper weekend sports car driving)
2. Not an car enthusiast, ie just want to 'mash-n-go' and look cool
3. A bent for drag racing, many good aspects of autos for the strip
4. Can't drive a stick and too lazy to learn or just plain uninterested

OK, I'm mostly just kidding and doing my duty to maintain the healthy rivalry between auto/manual drivers. But then, I'm a real bastard too.

I have owned both MN6 and A6 C6's and love the auto in traffic. However I miss the MN6 at times as well. No longer can I push in the clutch and rev at some ricer.

Perhaps I should point out here that many race cars (such as F1) use "automatics" (albeit, they are truly automatically-controlled clutch tranmissions, not slush boxes). I fail to see the distinction that somehow shifting makes it more "sporting" ... as the racers have discovered, not shifting gives you more time to concentrate on driving.

But to each his own.

Once you become familiar with the tranny and it's habits, I think you'll enjoy driving with it.

Default A6 or MN6

Over the years, I have enjoyed driving both stick and auto trans. My opinion is that to make the choice of which state of mind you want to be in while driving. Do you want the laid-back go-pedal approach where you just sit there and enjoy, or do you want to drive the car aggressively and go to the next level of driver involvement?

One will be the best compromise for the style of driving and driver involvement you desire. I chose the auto for my C6 coupe built last week.

My reason for the A6 was that I used to have a 2001 Trans Am that had the six speed manual but the shifting was very sloppy - many a time I missed a shift due to gearbox problems. My understanding (and correct me if I'm wrong) is that the Corvette's manual transmission is made by the same company.

A6 and NO regrets. Had a 97 and an 01 mn6 by GM and kept both cars only a year.

I love my A6 but the shifts are slow and mushy. Probably losing et on every shift as compared to the way my 98 Camaro shifted. But it had programming which doesn't seem to be available for our A6s.

I see in your profile that you have a highly modded 01 Z06. I guess you will keep it and you'll have your performance driving with it.

Then you want the new C6 for comfortable city driving, correct?
The automatic can't be beat at that.
