Well, it isn't the preferred locations, but if jacking it up there breaks it, then it was about to break anyway and you'd probably feel lucky that it didn't happen when you were driving it.

I do it all the time there - back and front. I use about a 3 foot 2x4 like i said the displace the force and protect the metal.
Just test it out, do it slowly, make sure the wood has solid contact points, etc .... one things I always do though if I am crawling under a car is put something under it so that if the stands or jack let go, there is something to keep me from being crushed - at that point I dont care about the damage to the car .... extra tires, or even spare stands or even wood under wheel I am near

am i missing something or is there a way/special jack that can get to the preferred spots? I havent actually tried but it seems that my floor jack cant fit underneath the car. My last oil change i ended up driving the car onto a curb rather then just looking for a way to jack it up. Am i just stupid/oblivious?

Wise words, I had a real life experience in high school when a gearhead buddy of mine's father was crushed by his '69 RS Camaro, no one around, he didn't make it. Hydraulic jack gave out. Sad tragedy, cool Dad. Take the extra couple minutes.
