The brakes on my '05 C6 are squeeking. The dealer told me this is a adesign flaw and that Chevy is working on it. This sounds like a bunch of crap to me. Does anyone else have this problem and can it be fixed?
If it has RPO Z51, that's pretty common. It isn't really a problem so much as a matter of the brakes being designed for more agressive braking than you're likely to use on the street. Mostly its a problem under light braking when the brakes are cold.
Suggestions are:
(1) bedding the pads (search the forum for the procedure),
(2) replacing the pads with the newer ('06/'07) pads, or
(3) changing to a lower-temp pad (non-Z51 or ceramic)
There appear to be a very few non-Z51 cars that are squealers. I've wondered if they could have been assembled with Z51 pads.
I have a C6 M6 with the Z51 option. It only has 1200 miles on it, but since the weather has gotten a little warmer here in NY I have started to open the passenger side window. My rear passenger brake is squeaking like crazy. Solution: Close the window.
I have contacted the dealer and he acknowledged that GM is having the problem, but there has been no service bulletins issued for the solution. I am just about to pull the trigger on ordering ceramic pads. My main reason is to cut down on the excessive brake dust. Hopefully, these will not squeak worse.
The dealer also mentioned bedding the brakes, which I haven't tried yet. The brake dust in really making me NUTS.

So I guess the bulletin was removed! I think the bulletin just replaced the pads with newer style one anyways. It also reduced brake dust by 80%!
Bob, with regard to the '05 C6... my understanding was that if the owner complained about the brakes squeaking, that the dealership should replace the pads. I know this because during the year the car club I belong to does a number of shows at local dealerships.
We were told that it was not a recall, but for '05's a bulletin stated that that was the action the dealership should take to resolve the complaint.
I also had squealing from the very beginning on my 06-C6-A6-Magnetic Ride. Took it into the dealer, confirmed that Chevy knows about it, but no solution yet. It was so bad, I bought a set of Delco Ceramic pads and convinced the dealer to install them for free. Night & Day. Totally different. I'll hear an occasional minor squeal but no where as loud or as long in duration. Definitely keeps the wheels cleaner looking a lot longer. They don't stop as fast as the old pads but you easily adjust to it. I would recommend ceramic pads for anyone suffering this massively annoying probelm and they're not too expensive at all.
i have a 2005 c6 non z51 and they squeel like crazy.. dealer will do nothing for me..
