I was thinking about relocating my battery to the rear cubby because I will be installing a maggie and I wanted to get to the battery easily and redistribute weight to the rear of the car to offset the weight of the s/c. I was researching better batteries than the OEM if I were to do this. I was looking at the Odessey PC 1500 which has 825 CCA 125 RC (with a 25 amp load!) and the same case size as the optima battery. I thought that guys that are not getting durable fixes for DBS could help prolong time between DBS events by using two batteries in parallel by using both rear cubbies.
I realize this is not a fix but should dramatically increase the reserve capacity of the system while maintaining a 12 volts system and hopefully making the car more enjoyable/dependable.
Yes, if using 2 PC 1500 batteries, you would increase net weight by approx 65lbs but it would also help the car to dig off the line with the weight being close to the rear tires.
BTW for comparison of the Odessey PC 1500 with the OEM, the OEM battery CCA's are 660 and RC 95
Why not just install a PriortyStart and avoid all the other hardware?Plug the car into a Battery Tender in the garage and start every time.I have a 2005 I bought new two years ago and it has 1300 miles on it,which tells you how much I drive it.With PriortyStart , a Tender, and an Optima Red Top I installed the day the car came home, it has never failed to start strong.
Was thinking about those that travel and cannot use a tender for 3-4 days. Also i was reading a few posts where(for some reason) the PS want working.
Not trying to sell this idea--just a thought
GM has a flash to fix the DBS issue. No cases of DBS have been reported after the flash that I know of. It is time that some 05 original batteries need to be replaced. My 05 is over two years old and the original battery just died. Good luck with the battery relocation. I would be interested in pictures when your done.
lead acid batteries produce explosive/corrosive gas when charged. you would have to vent the compartments. you could use expensive absorbed glass mat (agm) batteries as they are sealed and do not gas.
plus even with large expensive cables, you would have a pretty good voltage drop between the battery and the alternator which if you want to do it right would require a sense lead charging control.
FYI
The PriortyStart will do you no good if the problem is with the battery itself.Other parasitic drains in the electrical system will activate it.There are at least two ways to reactivate your electrical system with PriortyStart.Push in the cigarette lighter or remove the small ground wire that clips onto the negative post of the battery and reattach it.I have read of other forum members that have had problems, but to my knowledge they were due to bad batteries.
I wouldn't mess with relocating the battery. Before all the mods ask the dealer to do the remote control door lock module reflash. If they claim they can't find it, tell them to type into the bulletin seach - 05 Corvette - dead battery, it will come right up.
Get the reflash, then an Optima and a Battery Tender Plus and you'll be all set. Cheaper and easier that trying to put 2 batteries in the trunk.
