Default Project 402 underway!!!

Well, I'm doing a 402. The project should be wrapped up in a couple of weeks. Here is a rundown of the specs.

Target Compression ratio:11.42:1
Cometic .051" head gaskets
Final Quench distance of .039"
Late Model Engines Built 402
Callies Dragonslayer crank
Callies Compstar rods
Weisco nitrous forged flat top pistons w/8cc valve reliefs
Childs and Albert dura moly rings
Federal mogul main bearings
Clevite rod bearings
Durabond cam bearings
ARP head studs
ARP main studs
ARP cam bolts
ARP Rod bolts
LS7 lifters
Camotion 244/250 .646"/.646" 114lsa cam

This will be bolted up with my supporting mods from my previous head/cam setup.

AFR 225's w/ 63cc chamber
AFR 8019 valve springs
AFR Ported FAST 90mm intake
Shaner S2 ported TB
Comp pushrods
Powerbond 25% UD pulley
Borla touring catback
American Racing 1 7/8" headers
3" offroad X-pipe
Vararam intake/spacer

This will be going through the 3.90 gears already in the car.

I'm hoping for 500whp/475wtq which I don't think should be an issue. I just need to figure out the injector thing and that's pretty much it. I recently stepped down in cam in my 04 GTO(408 powered) to a 244/248 .612/.615 112LSA. Joe G was with me at the dyno then. I was hoping for 475+ with the smaller cam. Here is a graph overlayed with Joe G's 11.80@119 full bolt on vette.

Here is what she put down:

Needless to say, I'm pretty excited. It's only 30whp than I had before, but the tq gain is huge! The power under the curve gains will be worth it's weight in gold. I'll keep you guys updated and bring Joe G. along with me during the dyno session so I can get some final numbers.

The only thing I'm questioning at this point is cam selection. Too aggressive? The deed is done at this point, but there is no looking back now.

That IS a big cam - should make for some big numbers. Can the factory rockers handle that much lift without binding?

I think it'd be a wise investment for you to get one of the new QTP 2 piece timing covers! You know that mod bug bites you every so often and that'll save you some labor.

GMHTP arrived at my house yesterday, they did a similar build 402 swapping L92's for the installed AFR 225's, but with a smaller 236/236 580/580 112 cam. Both combos made 480/478 or so in a T/A with the AFR's making a little more tq down low. Numbers from memory, don't have the mag in front of me. So you should make quite a bit more with the cam you've selected.

Pretty excited myself to see this come together. Should be a real beast. I'm feeling a little bit of H/C envy myself after you posted that dyno sheet - my results look pretty paltry! :o

Joe, the issue arrived at my house yesterday as well. What is unfair in that comparison is that they used the L95/L76 setup vs the AFR 225's but only used it with a stock 78mm tb and unported FAST 78mm. There are solid gains of 10whp from the 78 to the 90mm setup. The porting only adds to that.

My dyno of my GTO curve above has an unported fast 90 setup. The porting would be worth some good power in addition to that. I'm going to save some coin and let the l92/l76 thing get perfected and possibly upgrade down the road.

Nice stats Dougie. Any reason you didn't go with a pre-assembled bare block from Scoggin-D or Texas Speed, 'cause the price sure seems right on those.

I was close to going with Scoggin-D, but didn't. I tried calling Texas speed for 6 days straight and spoke with someone who never called me back. I tried calling for 4 more days after the first inital contact and felt it wasn't worth my time to chase someone to pay them thousands of dollars for a product. This is just my own experiece with them though.

I had purchased a motor through LME previously and had out of this world customer service. I am on the same track this time around. I couldn't be happier. They really know their stuff and work with the customer. I am shipping them my heads so they can setup the valvetrain and verify seat and open pressures of the spring.
