Default Bouncing off the limter...

why do some believe that the occasional bounce off the limter is harmful to the engine. i understand about living at the limiter, but the occasional bounce isn't too harmful, just back off a bit.

IMHO it appears if you do the bounce ofen your not paying as much attention to your driving as you should. It happens to all of us at one time or another.
It DOES set a code in your computer system, and if it shows a lot of bounces in there it could get your service dept. to question a warrenty problem (read, abuse)

I did it the first ride this spring (after a long winter sleep) and got to admit I felt a little stupid about it. I thought better of my driving skills.
(ready for the hecklers now)

If that worries you, clear the codes before any service

Not loosing sleep about a once a year occurence.

What you say is good advice for some people. Of course most that do the bounce a lot might not be up to clearing codes.

I've hit mine 3-4 times in the past 2 1/2 years. No problem.

Next install is a shift light to help NN here avoid the possibility.

Sitting on the limiter won't hurt anything any more than constant rpm right under the limiter set point. I have a two step limiter on my Mustang and I have held it at 6800 rpm on the limiter for 20 seconds or so at a time when staging. No problems, but I shift this motor at 8000 rpm.

The limiter setpoint can be raised a few hundred rpm to keep you from hitting it when shifting if desired.

Actually, it won't. Didn't hurt a thing but this was a double overhead cam Ford. Not standard practice, just happens when the track guys had trouble with getting the tree started.

One warning, on a nitrous car, you better have an rpm window switch set below the rev limiter if you are going to hit the limiter.

These engines will withstand hitting the rev limiter plenty of times. That's why it there. Now upping the limiter on stock springs and banging on the limiter regularly and you might have a problem.

The LS2 timing chain setup is pretty strong. Just don't make it a habit.

The strength of the timing chain isn't the issue. Spring fatigue and valve float are. You really don't want the valve head and piston crown to meet.

I've seen many, many guys sit on the rev limiter for 10-15 seconds while doing burnouts. While it's not a good idea, it wont hurt the engine. There is an error factor built in to the car, so if it redlines at 6,500, it will probably rev the at least 7,000 without harm.

I just cannot understand why anybody would want to bounce off the limiter purposely. Seems to me nothing more than blatant and unnecessary abuse of the car... much like frying the tires. And many of those who do that are afraid to take their cars out in the rain. Beat the living cr*p out of the drivetrain but DON'T dare get dust on the paint!!!

I hit a rev limiter once... accidentally... one a motorcycle... redline was about 10,500 rpm and think I hit around 11,000 rpm before I felt the limiter... then shifted instantly... I did win the race though.
