Default What mods do I want? Help Please!!

Hey guys, I am getting ready to take my '06 mn6 coupe to MTI in Atlanta very soon. I was going to let them do a stage I for 4 grand, but I think I just want a tune and maybe new intake. I would like to get as close to 400 rwhp as I can, and I know the stage I would put me real close, but what do you guys suggest I have done? I thought about going with 3:90 gears also. I like the way my stock exhaust sounds and I really dont want to change it.

I want the car a little more powerful than it is, but I tell you, it feels pretty good stock! I know we all get use to the horsepower and then we want more. I guess the bottom line is, what is the best bang for the buck?................thanks

You want an inlet (the Vararam or Honker) and definitely get headers (I like my LG Pro's, but the ARH or Kooks are also fine). I picked up 26 rwhp with the headers and the car feels great.

I just had a Vararam Snake Charmer CAI, 160 t-stat, tune and 4.10s installed and I have a totally different car now...

I also have the stock exhaust and getting 4.10s, CAI and tune will give you the best bang for your buck.

I have a bad case of mod fever myself. But I would say to the extent that you can -- hold off and drive the car.

Sounds like you have goals, and want to mod in steps. Great. If you have to mod, try the same mod on another car if you can.

For example, I went 3.9 gears with a Z-51 6 speed manual, and while I like it, I might have made a different decision if I’d driven a car with that set-up first.

A simple good start would be a Callaway Honker, as the car will feel more responsive. It really is a LOT of car for the money, enjoy!

Default If I wanted to SPEND the $$$

I got an insurance settlement and got basically "Stage 1" plus ZO6 repr's w/ Proxes4's for basically nothin

Just Me
CAI either Callaway or VRAM-their new one, see their dyno and 1/4 mile results
Headers with high flow cats, Xpipe your choice to OEM Exhaust
160 stat
Ported TB from CoryHarris, maybe ported intake
Don't know about plugs and wires
Oil Catch Can
OEM exhaust will sound basically the same, a few DB's increase WOT

Look on the C6 parts section and get most of this pre-owned, remember its just me, I'm budget limited, take to MTI Racing or install it yourself.
Get Mail tune from COW, or MTI tune only
Save about half, get real close to 400 RWHP
Wait till H/C for your $500 dyno

Spend the rest on your 3.90's or 4.10's like I would like to do. Its been said you can gain .3-.4 in the 1/4 from this alone, little mileage change

I guess if I can pick up 26 rwp with headers alone I will go with them. I am afraid I will not like the sound or it will be louder than what I want. I like the stock sound. I had 3 diff sets of mufflers on a big block impala last year before I found the sound I liked and it was stock. I cant stand ANY flowmaster sound, I like a crisper sound like the old corvair turbo muffler.
If I understand correctly though, the headers alone wont make much sound diff right? I can go with my oem cat back since they flow as well as the aftermarket.
What if I went with headers, intake, 3:90 gears, and tune?.......thanks for your help.

In 30 years of racing/engine building/hot rodding, I have never once considered the bottle. Even in super stock years ago when I felt like cheating, I would never of used it. I dont mean any offense by this, so dont take it personal, but I will leave the nitrous for the new school nope cars(fast and furious) that only know how to bolt on and tweak computers.

Everybody has the right to do whatever they want, so please dont take offense.................

Before settling on the 3.90s, I suggest you drive a '06 mn6 coupe with 4.10s and if you can find it, one with 3.90s. I want to put headers on my stock exhaust also but I want to hear them on someone's car before I do it.

After talking with a number of CF members, I was convinced that 4.10s would give me the best bang for my buck.

Admittedly, you will give up some mpg's (~2 on the highway with the 4.10s) but the fun factor of acceleration will more than erase your concern about losing those mpg's.

JMHO...but it's your ride and you have to do what you have to do. If you were closer, you could have a ride/drive in mine.

Thats a very good point, I think I will go with the 4:10 gears if MTI can change them. Just got off the phone with them, and they are going to get back with me on the gear change.

As it stands now, I going with headers, intake, tune, and maybe gear change..........thanks for your help!!

Sound is a little louder, but hardly noticeable inside the cockpit. I'd also do the 160 thermostat while you're doing the headers and a Honker or Vararam would really compliment the setup.

No offense taken. I’m with you - leave it to the Ricer crowd. But $ for $ it can’t be beat.

I looked at Nitrous for the Vette but didn’t like driving with a bottle behind me and having to remember to open the Valve etc. What I think is absolutely a scream is the purge valve system. It you’d be worth it to just pull up at a light at night and blow the purge system.
