Twice in a week at about 35,950 miles my otherwise trouble free yellow MN6 coupe would not start and the DIC displayed "Service Steering Column Lock". Both times it was after sitting (in the Florida) sun for several hours with the windows up. The first time after leaving the car open for about 20 minutes to cool down, the car started right up. The second time it started only after I disconnected and reconnected the battery. So, with 35,995 miles I took it to the local Chevy dealer. They let it set in the sun with the windows up. Bingo, no start. They replaced the steering column lock module and said it worked fine. However, when I went to pick it up a few hours later they could not get it to start. They said no errors were noted on the DIC, no codes were set, and the battery voltage was good. So they still have it. I checked on All Data and see there are only column lock TSBs for the C5. No one in our local Corvette club has experienced this. Anyone have any idea how wide spread this problem is?
You have an 05 and need to have the flash. It is a TSB by GM to correct DBS (dead battery syndrome). The other thing is if it's the original battery you should replace it also. This is a well known 05 Corvette problem with the MN6. It usually has nothing to do with the steering wheel lock. That was a C5 problem. Your dealer should know all about this issue.
ps The steering wheel lock message seems to be the message that comes up most often when the battery is low. It only means the battery is low and nothing to do with the lock.
For clarity the car would not crank every time? Did they say if any module showed a no communication message? Have them check the start enable relay. The steering column lock does not have any bearing on the start enable relay so the need to check both systems.
