Yes, you need to do headers with a cam to allow the engine to breath. Now with the converter available, you have a very large choice of cams. Before the converter was available you had to use a pretty small cam.

A cam alone will do you 35-50 RHWP depending on the cam.

A cam with out headers and heads is foolish. A CAI, CatBach, Heads, Headers & a cam is the way to go. If you're going to do a cam it makes sense to replace the heads as well - no extra labor. Do the above and you'll get 90-120 RHWP.

Remember the weakest link in our cars are the valve springs. Float @ 6,300-6,500 RPM. That's an extra $700.

You can do a cam without heads and be fine. We've done it hundreds of times and made great power. There's a LOT of extra labor and cost when you add heads to the equation. You're looking at having to remove the intake manifold, all of the fuel lines, exhaust, etc. There's a lot more work that has to be done to put heads on. So if somebody is going to charge you the same labor for a cam only or a heads and cam package, you better get that in writing.
As far as $700 for the springs, somebody definitely saw you coming... you can get the Comp Cams 26921 spring kit, that comes with springs, seals, seats, and titanium retainers all for less than $600.

Just a few quick examples, off the top of my head. (All hp/tq numbers are REAR WHEEL numbers.)

06 C6 A6 - Cam/heads/full exhaust/Honker/n2o Car made 435 n/a and 510 on a 100 shot.

05 C6 A4 - Procharger P1SC/3200 stall/3.42 gears/full exhaust. Car made 525.

05 C6 A4 - Cam/heads/full exhaust/Fast intake. Car made 445. We were also featured in Vette Magazine for that car.

07 Z06 - Honker/plugs/wires/tune. Car made 462.

05 C5 M6 - Cam/full exhaust/Vararam. Car made 405.

Must be nice to be a baller... $100 is a nice chunk of money, at least to me.

I sell that set for $599.95.

Ford injectors are rated using the Ford rails/system. On our system the 30#s are more like 40 pounders.
