Default Better gas mileage?

I love the feeling of acceleration in my C5 when I want to get on it. As a matter of fact that is the main reason I bought a Corvette. But I also take great pleasue in averaging over 27 mpg on long road trips. Most people who are not knowlegable about Corvettes can't believe the potential mpg we can get when just cruising. I know that displacement on demand are dirty words around here, but I am not against it, provided the transition is seamless. Maybe future Corvettes will have an on/off switch for DOD? My question for you all is this: If the Corvette with an LS2, or now the LS3, had DOD or "active fuel management" just how much highway mpg could this car achieve?

Only a 10% increase by turning off half the engine? It hardly seems worth the effort. Why does GM do this at all?
