Default Optima RedTop Installed

Hi,

After a convenient reminder by the battery in my other car dying after it's third year, I took preemptive action to replace the battery in my 2005 C6 Convertible. How many times must I re-learn that factory batteries only last 2 to 3 years in Houston's heat???

I did a lot of searching on the forum but had a really hard time finding a definitive post stating which Optima RedTop would work in a 2005 C6. This compelled me to post my results.

After 22 months my factory battery did appear to be leaking from the positive post. There was very noticeable corrosion of the post and cable and I had to do some scrubbing to get rid of it all. I am glad that I took time to change it now rather than waiting for it's inevitable death in the coming months.

I had an Optima in my C5 for 5 years so I knew I was going to go with another RedTop. I went to AutoZone and compared the dimensions of the Optima RedTop 34/78 and Optima RedTop 75/25. Both batteries appeared to have the same size base as the factory battery (within eyeball tolerances). This seems to be the most important dimension for fastening the battery into the vette. Because of that, I went with the more powerful 34/78 battery for $169.

The Optima RedTop 34/78 installed with ease and was very securely fastened to the car using the factory battery holder. The car roared to life and all was well.

For those hoping to save $20, I feel pretty confident that the 75/25 battery would have worked equally well.

Because no thread has worth without pictures:

Please excuse the filthy engine compartment...my car is a daily driver

Gotta love the optimas. Question though, with a yellow car why not get a yellow top? I've had the yellow top in all three of my cars for years now, no issues either, great brand.

Funny, I never even considered putting in a deep-cycle battery! Since I don't show the car or have any fancy electronics and since I drive it daily, a deep-cycle battery isn't really needed but yes, it would have looked cool!

Justin,

This is good timing. I have a yellow top optima in my Z and I think its starting to go bad. I've had it for about 4.5 years though. I'm going to replace it with either another yellow or red top.

When doing my research I noticed some threads talking about battery replacement in 2006+ C6s and some mentioned the posts being reversed from 2005. That is partially why I felt the need to start this thread for 2005 owners.

Justin, thanks from another Hugetown daily driven 2005 convertible owner. I, too, have been thinking about a premptive replacement of my battery. No problems now, but you know it is gonna fail someday.

Thanks for posting, Justin. I can't believe - it never occured to me I could just replace the battery instead of the whole car

I did yellow to match my car. Wrong reason for doing it, but a yellow can be used in place of a red, but you should never use a red in place of a yellow.

Nice write-up. BTW, that's also a great pic of the cabin airfilter compartment door if anyone's interested.
