Default Non-GM replacement AXLE nuts - Size? Source?

Guys,

I know this info was posted already, but with the myriad of existing axle nut threads containing zillions of posts, I just can't seem to find the info now.

My 2006 coupe has 33mm nuts. I have decided to "double-nut" based on reports of nuts loosening up to near 0 torque within 1500 miles. I still plan to check torque periodically anyway.

Some who have purchased new GM nuts claim that the new over the counter nuts are 34mm.... but I'd like to use 33mm nuts like the ones I already have on the car (so I can do periodic torque checks with just one 33mm socket!).

My best bet is to go to a specialty hardware distributor and try to get 33mm nuts for this application... this way I know what I'm getting as opposed to rolling the dice at the GM counter (and getting 34mm nuts).

To save me some time measuring... what is the diameter and thread pitch of these nuts?

Any tips for a good online hardware distributor that might carry such nuts?

Thanks

I measured them and posted a few weeks ago. I get them to be M27x2.0. (27diax 2mm pitch). This is a really unusual size so you won't probably get them at Home Depot. But a trip to a local CV specialty repair shop probably will. BTW, the part number is the same as the front axle nut for a GEO!

Thanks.

I know this info had been posted in the past but I just couldn't find it. Searching for "axle nuts" brings up very many threads, each containing tons of posts, could take a half hour to go through everything carefully. I actually gave it a shot and after like 10 minutes I gave up.

I did wind up measuring the axle shaft last night and I DID come up with a pitch of 2.0mm, and an outer diameter of 1.051" (with my standard unit dial caliper... don't have a metric one)... and since 1.051" = 26.7mm, looks like I measured correctly.

I once had found a great source of unusual hardware online, can't find it now... will check it out. May turn out to be easier in the long run to just get the GM nuts, even if it requires buying a second (34mm) socket for $13.

You don't need another socket, just the one is fine. Torque first nut to 118lbs and then screw on the second nut and torque it to 100lbs. You can get the nuts from gmpartdirect part# 10257766
or here

I dig it. The reason I may need another socket is because the nuts on my car are 33mm... and supposedly the new over the counter GM nuts are 34mm. I already bought a 33mm socket for the primary original nuts. If I add new 34mm nuts as well, I'll need to go buy a 34mm socket too (another $13 spent and another large socket that I'll probably never use for anything else cluttering my tool chest). Would be way more efficent if I could get 33mm nuts now... then I'd only need my one 33mm socket. It's no big deal in any case, just trying to be efficient if possible. Thanks

But after doing a bit of searching, looks like it may be hard to nearly impossible to find these nuts on the outside... I may have to get them from GM whether I like it or not.

Anyone know what these nuts cost from GM?

I guess another option for me is to get four of the new 34mm nuts and a 34mm socket... put all four on the car and ditch the 33mm nuts and socket. Man, I'm way over thinking this . Maybe I should just forget the double-nut.. after all, it took a whole 13k miles or so for only one side to loosen to 50 lbs/ft. Hopefully if I check `em every 5k miles or so they're be alright, even witout a doouble-nut.
