Default "Clunk" in A6

When shifting from reverse to drive or drive to reverse while stopped there seems to be a pronounced "clunk". This "clunk" is not like dropping a cinderblock onto the concrete but it is definately there. Almost seems like there is a lot of play in the drive shaft or something. Maybe bad u-joint? I have had other cars where the shift from drive to reverse or vice versa is not even noticable. This one definately is. Even from park to reverse there is some slack and a clunk. Anyone else with an A6 notice this??

I think it may just be the shaft changing sides of the u-joint, going from reverse to drive, so it could be a little loose or maybe a tranny mount. I hear a slight one, but it's been there since mile one and hasn't gotten worse, so I figure it's good.

Mine has as well, so I'm thinking it's normal, just wanted to see if anyone else experienced it. Now that I think about it, it is the shaft chanking sides of the u-joint, but the play seems a little excessive to me.

The slack is probally why some higher HP M6s get failure in the shaft. In an A6, we can take the slack out by flashing the rpms a bit before launch. The A4 in my 547rwhp 2000 TA had the same slack, but never broke the joint or shaft due to taking the slack out during staging. I've seen more than one manual tear it all to 'ell by dropping the clutch at launch. If you've owned other rwd GMs, they probally had the same issue, but more sound deadening so you didn't notice it.

I was thinking the same....just looking for confirmation. I'm pretty picky about my car, so I'm sure it's normal. I hear noises others probably don't. Thanks for your help.
