Has anyone fabricated straight pipes (axle back) for use on the track?
If so, how loud were they? Could you drive to the track and back without worrying about getting pulled over?
Thanks,
John
some one on this forum has done it, but i can't recall his name. i am sure you can drive to the track and back without getting pulled over as long as you are not getting on it every chance you get. i had a z28 with straight pipe and no cats. got pull over for doing a 2 mph rolling stop at a stop sign, LEO didn't even say anything about the exhaust.
My first "catback" was straight pipes. It was unbearable! The drone was horrible and it didn't sound good at all. My second "catback" was fabbed race bullets with the stock tips. It actually sounded great, got more compliments on it than ever. Over time, it began to uncontrolably drone! You can do either cheap. However, for the track, I would just do an electric cut out(s). Just my .02.
I don't think I'd want to drive it far with that setup, but 30 min. or so to the track should be bearable. On the track, the drone shouldn't be a problem since your not holding revs at one particular frequency.
Why bother making axle back pipes? I just headers and the x-pipe. There is almost no drone at all even with my top up. It may be worse if you ran the pipes all the way back. Do a search and you can find a sounds clip of mine.
I have straight pipes and it isn't load to me. I have the stock manifiolds with stock cats, stock h-pipe and no mufflers. To me it isn't as load as any other muscle car on the street with flowmasters. The sound is great and I have got nothing but rave with everyone who has heard it. I am about 2 weeks away from Headers, x-pipe and a tune. I plan on not running any mufflers or cats but have not heard this combo personally, I have heard it said it will be too unbearable inside but I will go from there.....I like my sh&*% loud and angry.

i've had this setup. nasty!!!! everywhere you go someone is sayin how awesome the car sounds. my current setup-LG's, no cats, bullets. on my
4th vette with straight pipes and i will not run anything else.
The car sounds normal until I get on in it and when I do, every head turns. There is no way I am spending $1,600 on a replacement exhaust system that a. does not add power and b. makes the exhaust drone more. Straight pipes are the way to go!
