Default Tuners

I could use some help here. I keep hearing about tuners, even that GM knows that tuners can up the horsepower in the vettes so they don't even have to offer more than one engine. Is a tuner an actual guy or guys in a garage that works on an engine to fine tune it to run its' best. If so, do you have to add mods to get a better running car than what GM delivers to you. Are tuners guys who just work on vettes? I'm in North Dakota, if anyone on here knows of someone who tunes vettes and can get more power out of them without lots of mods let me know. So, someone please give me an explanation of a "tuner"
Thanks

The tuning is done by an individual with a computer and software that hooks up to your car. What a tuner does is to change the stock settings in the computer to get the bets performance out of it.

The most commonly asked question is - "Well the car is brand new so why didn't GM optimize it for power and performance from the factory?"

There are 2 real answers to this question in my opinion:

1. GM is concerned with performance, but they also have other things to worry about like emissions and making the car as bulletproof as possible. This ties their hands a bit with respect to what they can do.

2. All of our cars are assembled on a line and mass produced. Yet, no two cars are exactly a like. Some may run richer than others and have different specs even if they came off of the assembly line right after one another. So GM picks a happy medium that will work well for ALL of their cars, even if it is not optimized for EVERY car.

What the tuner does is optimize those settings for YOUR SPECIFIC car. The end result is a better running, more powerful, more efficient vehicle.

Cheers!

GM typically runs on the safe side with their tunes. Lean is bad, rich is safe. However, running rich for safety takes away from the optimum power. Typcally what the tuners are going to do is lean it out a little bit to give you a little more power.

How do you find one. I'm guessing most are in the bigger cities. I really don't feel I need to do a lot of mods. About the only thing may be a CAI, after that I'd leave it alone. However I do want the most out of the car. Anyone out there know a tuner in North Daktoa? Can you do it yourself with like a handheld tuner. I have a hand held tuner (superchip) for my avalanche and I felt a difference with that. It had a performance setting preset in the tuner and I just let it set it under that heading. Worked pretty good.

Handheld is likely your best bet. Tuning can and is risky for a LOT of different reasons. In a lot of cases, the tuners lock your computer to where they are the only ones that can tune it. Handhelds, you simply revert to stock. These cars have a ton of power anyways.

Finding one in ND is likely going to be a word of mouth thing. Go to a few car shows and ask around.

Has anyone used a hand held tuner? Could you tell the difference. Which one did you use? What settings did you use. I have an 08 with the NPP exhaust, so 436 hp.
