Default '06 Lifter Noise

All of a sudden, every cold start I got loud lifter noise for maybe 3 seconds. Completely goes away but with 3.1K, it doesn't give me a warm & fuzzy. Reminds me of my early junkers. Anyone else experiencing this? Since there's obviously a temporary metal to metal situation, is this potentially serious or just a nuisance? I know, I can go to the dealer but unless it's absolutely necessary, I avoid them like the plague.

Sounds like a piece of dirt or sludge is blocking the lifter relief hole, so the lifter is not pumped up. It sounds worse than it actually is. It's just the plunger inside the lifter clicking.

Mine has done it since new. Just a second or two. No big deal.

A lot depends on the oil flow / characteristics. It's not a problem, but is annoying. Try the Amsoil or Royal Purple. Don't laugh, but you can also put in a few oz. of Marvel Mystery Oil to try and clean up the lifters. Darn stuff works for me and is a good gas additive too.

I appreciate the responses, but can't imagine engine debris at 3100 miles. I did my 1st Mobil 5w-30 change at 1700 miles. I guess it could be the result of break-in trash, but it was quiet as a mouse until 3040 miles.

Do what they said above. I was having the same problem with my Camaro and it worked. The Mystery Oil is some good stuff.

That's been brought up before - but the another guy brought up a good point -as the inference is that some oil filters don't have the built in check valve. The point is, why would it matter on an engine where the filter hangs straight down? The oil is not going to drain out of it.

MY '08 makes this noise (since new) occaionally after sitting for several days - about 1 out of 6 times on a cold start. Leading me to believe it's one lifter not holding pressure if the motor is shut down with that particular lifter on the upstroke. It's always had the AC PF 48 filter.

Tell me more about Marvel Mystery oil (well - I've known of it's existence for 40 years) - I mean tell me if it would work in my case? How much to add?

Default 06 lifter noise

i was told to only use the mobile 1 oil, i figured that might be "un-true". will your computer still give you accurate readings as far as oil changes if you use a different brand???

As long as you use an oil that meets the required spec, you will be o.k.

This is an old post and I have changed my oil since. I noticed that the tapping stopped for a month or so and now on cold mornings I hear a little tap again. I still think it's not a big deal.
