Default Oil Filter Torque

Anyone know why GM specifies 22 ft-lb torque for the C6 oil filter? That's a lot more torque than would be achieved with a 3/4 turn after seating.

BTW, the factory oil filter was installed with considerable torque and was not easy to remove. I notice that other GM cars now have a 22 to 25 ft-lb oil filter specification.

They have been doing that since the C5. I think it is because they are flowing through the filter with much for pressure and / or volume. . . (if you don't do it, it will leak)

I've always used a full turn and it's never leaked. I have no clue what torque is required to do a full turn after first contact.

Quick and easy general spec used by a lot in the industry is as tight as you can get it with your hands.

Been doing that for 35 years, never had a leak and they always come off with a wrench with out damage.

Me too, not quite 35 years, however... I make sure my hand is clean of oil, and get a good grip and turn it as tight as I can. Never liked using the wrench to tighten, as it's pretty easy to get carried away and you could damage the rubber gasket on the filter. Some are not particularly well applied, I've heard.

I don't understand your concern...if you use the proper tools, the manufacturer's recommendation of 22 ft-lb is barely "breathed on". Sounds to me like you don't like changing old habits. Use what works for you...until it doesn't work anymore.

I did not express any concern, just asked if anyone knew why GM specified 22 ft-lbs of torque for the oil filter. This is higher torque than has been recommended for most engines and I assumed GM had a reason for the specification.

I have no problem changing old habits. Most of us prefer to understand the reason for doing something rather than just blindly doing it.

I assume my Snap-on torque wrenches are proper tools for the job?
