I just purchased an 2006, C6, A6 (a lot of 6's) with the Z51 option . I have searched unsuccessfully numerous web sites to find the ratios for each gear. Can someone provide me with the gear ratios for the A6.
From what I did find, it appears that the differential gear ratio is 2.56 , even with the Z51 option. I am used to my C5 6 speed with a 3.42 ratio. It appears that the 08 A6 Z51 gets the better 2.73 ratio. In the future I may change the differential gear ratio. What would be a reasonable ratio (2.73, 3.15, or 3.42) for a mildly modified (Headers, CAI, maybe mild cam)engine daily driver?
3.15's seem most popular for the A6. Here are the stock numbers for the A6:
Gear ratios
First gear 4.02
Second gear 2.36
Third gear 1.53
Fourth gear 1.15
Fifth gear 0.85
Sixth gear 0.67
Reverse 3.06
Final drive ratio 2.56
Keep in mind that a 4.02 1st gear is very low, to try and compensate for the 2.56 final drive. By comparison, the MS6 has a 2.66 (or 2.97 with Z51) 1st gear with a 3.42 final drive. But yes, the A6 will definitely benefit from a lower final drive.
Try The 3;15 Gears....you Should Be Pleased With The Results. 342 Gears May Be A Little Steep For A Lightly Modded A6. Your Gas Millage Around Town Won't Suffer. Just Shifts To A Higher Gear Faster. Don't Forget Your First Gear Ratio Is 4...and If You Do The Math It's Like Running A Five Series Gear In A Mn6.

Don't be too discouraged by those 2.56s (they are still standard (non Z51 cars) on the 2008 automatics as well) for the steeper transmission gearing (as mentioned above) allows for that numerically lower rear gear and they do perform.
Of course the new 2.73s or better yet a 3.15 or 3.42 gear would perform even better yet providing you have a tire to hook it all.
