As I said yesterday, likely to save a few pennies some manufacturers are using the wrong resistor, probably not enough wattage to handle the current generated.
Way too low Ohm thus high wattage on the commercial devices....... especially when mounting the cheap carbon resistor in epoxy.
All the system needs is "continuity" thus the DIY thingy using a 2.2K Ohm Radio Shack device will work indefinitely if done correctly (i.e. sealed from moisture)
For the Guys that have pulled the fuse and gotten a fault code, I must wonder if replacing the fuse with a 2.2K ohm resister wouldn't work fine without setting a code........If I didn't already have my DIY thingy done, I would try it!

So you are assuming 75% of all the other items in your life have lead in them? It would be best to read the labels before you buy next time. Bring your politically correct reading glasses.
Better wash your hands, the keyboard you just used has lead in it also.
