Three simple words - OH MY GOD!
That thought pretty much sums up how we felt after my son and I got back from the car's maiden voyage after having it sit for three weeks and receive a whole bunch of mods:
- Vararam CAI
- American Racing headers
- Comp Cams camshaft
- 3000 stall converter
- 3.15 differential
- Custom tune
I only have a pretty modest tune in it right now, yet the car is still unbelievably insane. Since I did so much to it all at once it's hard to pinpoint exactly which mod had the most effect on the SOTP feel, but I would probably guess it's the combination of the stall converter and the 3.15 differential.
Admittedly, I was pretty nervous about doing the converter and stall but after just getting back from my little test drive, my only wish was that I had done it sooner. I am however going to have to be a little careful because I punched it while I was doing 40 and after the downshift it broke the tires free. Thank you Traction Control!
I also bought a wideband O2 sensor but I don't have it connected to the HP Tuner yet. Once I get that done however, I should be able to fine tune it even more.
My next stop will be Sacramento Raceway this Wednesday night. A few weeks back I ran a 12.992 in stock form and on run flats so I'm hoping to hit mid-low 11's this time out since I'll have MT ET Street radials to hopefully provide some much needed traction.
I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped make this happen:
- The guys RPM Transmission who sold me the differential and for providing the transmission info for the tune. They were a HUGE help.
- Eli from Red Star Performance for the converter.
- Robert from Advance Dyno for the camshaft and for the phone support while I was installing it.
- Mike from Mike Norris Motorsports for a great deal on my headers
- Mike from Straightline for helping me with the tune as well as being patient enough to take the time to explain exactly what he was doing in the process.
I just ran mine against an LG M6 with 477rwhp and 438rwtq and pulled him hard(at least 3 lengths) on four seperate runs, and on every run he got the jump on me. Gotta love these A6's
You should ask about the track rules on running an 11.99/11.50 or better you will need a rollbar and will be asked to stop running until you upgrade your car with the proper safety features needed. Some tracks are easier with the rules than others. Good Luck C6 ROLLER

I went with a Comp Cams with the following specs:
230/236, 591/601, 113 LSA
It still needs to be dialed in so it's a little shakey when I'm idling at a light but even if I couldn't refine the tune anymore, I'd be happy with it the way it is now.

I haven't really noticed all that much difference in normal driving which kinda surprised me. I thought that I'd end up having to step on the gas more just to get moving from a dead stop but it feels pretty much the same as stock.
The main difference that I've noticed is that if I punch it, the engine RPMs quickly shoot up and then the car just launches. I can't wait until I get it to the track on Wednesday night.

I've been wanting the 3:15's but have been on the fence as far as the converter because I hadn't heard much from those who have them in the A6. My car has a big cam, too which is why I am considering the converter. Since the rear has to come out anyway, that would be the time to do it. Keep us posted on your 1/4 mi times

That's how I finally decided on the differential. I already bought the converter and figured what the heck, I might as well do both and then a day later my diffferential was on it's way from RPM.
Congrats on a successful install. Good luck at the track, be sure to post results.
If you run sub 11.50 on the first run and get a warning but they let you run again (promise them you'll be good), be sure to try to hold out until the 1000' mark and then dump it, you can concontruct the ET pretty closely from there and enjoy some more runs.
what are your 1/4 mile numbers after the work.... I did the headers CAI 2005 A4 .... 90degrees f. 12.5 113 mph It was my first time at the track with the convert.I know the car will run below12.3 - 12.2. with cooler temps....

This Wednesday will be my first time at the track after the mods.
At Sacramento Raceway you can't run below 11.5 on Wednesday nights (regardless of whether your car has a cage or not) so part of me is hoping it'll run that fast and part of me is hoping it won't so that I don't get kicked off the track.
When I went a couple of weeks back, RickyBobby had to purposely drive his car slow and it didn't look like it was much fun having to drive like that.
Oh well, I guess there could be worse things to have to worry about, right?

Dying with your boots on, eh?
Yeah, I'm definitely gonna make sure that I find out what the car can do at least once, even if it ends up being a short night because of it. I didn't just spend $7000 only to have to worry about keeping my foot out of it.
NHRA rules, which is what most tracks follow, is a roll cage at 11.4999 or faster. But don't worry. I don't think you are in any danger of that with your mods. And if you do break, all they do is kick you out, which is more of an honor than anything else. That seems to be everyone's goal at the track down here.
