A6 trans slamming into gear?

A6 trans slamming into gear?
I have an '06 A6 w/19,000 miles and after backing out of the garage this morning, I shifted it into "D" and a CLUNK along with a shudder came out of the transmission. 
I then attempted to drive forward and it felt like it was stuck in 2nd or 3rd. So I put it in reverse to pull over to the curb and CLUNK again. I then put it into park, shut off the engine and waited about 2 minutes before restarting. Now I have a engine icon lit up and sometimes it shifted oddly like slipping or something.
It's at the dealer now but has anyone else experienced this sympton on an A6 and if so, what was the diagnosis?
Update: Service guy stated that a $5.00 switch on the side of the transmission is failing and they had to order one. GM is out of stock for about 2 weeks. I wonder what $5.00 switch he is referring to on the transmission.
