I have an 07 Z with the dreaded shifter rattle. It was there from day one. I played with it, changed it to a Hurst, then B&M all to no avail. While it did rattle a little less with the B&M it was still there. Like a splinter in your butt you can't get rid of it, it won't kill you, but its still there. When GM came out with the new non-rattle shifter I figured I would give it a shot. IT WORKS like a charm. The funny thing is, its a replacement for the entire shifter handle and box. I really don't care what goes on inside so long as its quiet. Its been a long slow circle back to a stock shifter, what a waste of time and money. I wonder if the B&M shifter will rattle with the new shifter assembly? When I have time to play I have to try it. So, for everyone who has been wondering whether or not to try the new one, go for it.
What is the new non-rattle shifter? Did you just put a non- Z06 shifter in?
This is a factory Z51 shifter. Note the rubber isolaters where the base bolts to the torque tube.
This is a 08 Z06 shifter. Note the thicker flange (no rubber) that bolts to the torque tube.
For what its worth, here's my custom billet shifter handle mounted to the Z06 base. This setup rattles less than the factory setup, which is isolated in the handle and in the base I think the weight of the factory handle and **** is what makes them rattle so much. I've got to really hammer my car to get my handle to rattle at all, and even then it's not bad. What are you using for a ****?
The 08 shifter is not the same. I mention this about my 07 only because so many 06-07 cars have a rattle from the shifter when you accelerate. Its not the **** that causes it, it just shows up there. The new shifter is the "fix". I have to try a shorte shifter like the B&M with the bottom box portion to see if the rattle is still gone.
I for one would be very interested to hear how this works out. I have a B&M sitting in the box still that I haven't installed for this very reason. I'm temped to order the 08 z06 box to install at the same time. Do you by chance have a part number/price? I think I might just try it as an experiment if cost isn't prohibitive.
I don't remember the part number, but the part number for the 06,07 z06 non rattle shifter is the same as the 08 z06 shifter. It was on an earlier post from Gene I believe.
. Its not the **** that causes it, it just shows up there.
The handle/**** doesn't cause the rattle but it sure affects the severity of it. I've made over 10 custom handles for C5's and C6's out of stainless steel, aluminum, delrin and titanium. The heavier handles (especially top heavy ones) always rattle more.
Well I've waited for a year for this fix for my 07 Z. Dealer finally got the parts in and I took the car over and dropped it off yesterday. I picked it up this AM after they installed the "no rattle" P/N 25823571 shifter along with a new P/N 25821873 **** and all new fasteners and it is as bad or worse than it was before. Has anyone else had this new GM fix fail on their Z? I had very high expectations for this fix. Really disappointed.
