You can just do the CAM but keep the lift under .600.
Springs are the weak link in the OEM package. Recommend dual springs. The CompCam Behive springs look good but do not measure up. Also several breakages have been reported. Keep the OEM rockers.
All the speed shops have packages that include springs, retainers & push rods. Look on the left side of this page. LGM, Livernois, LPE, and KATECH are just a few
Cam only is a great mod. Keep in mind the boost is in the upper half of the RPM band so if youre the kind of guy that doesnt live up that high, other mods would be better for you.
Gears are a boost at all speeds/rpm's. The obvious best place you gain is low in RPM. Hitting the gas pedal off the line or even at 5k rpms, a set of 4.10's (or 3.42's on an auto) is still going to offer the least resistnce to acceleration.
To get the most of the cam you select, you need headers,160 stat, aftermarket air intake, and a good tune, Otherwise you've only got a piece of the pusszle. Remember an engine is just an air pump. Air in air out. A cam meters fuel and air in and the exhaust meters exhaust gases out. So you need to improve the motor at both ends, not just inside. No heads aren't necessary, but again they do make that old air pump work better. Much better as a matter of fact. It's all about how fast you want to go and how much $$$ you want to spend to get there.
