Default A6 Adaptive Programming - Paddle Shifters come in!

Hey all,

Many of you know all the problems I had with my A6 within the first 1500 miles. After all the headaches, I now have a new transmission. But unlike the original transmission, I immediately began paddle shifting with the replacement and found the shifting very inconsistent. After trying several things, the dealer held a conference call with a GM transmission engineer for my benefit. Here's what I was told by the guy:

The A6 does have adaptive programming which I knew, but according to the tech, it ONLY learns while in "Drive" and not in "S". He specifically recommended that I take it out and "run it hard" in D mode, letting it redline shift. Hey, that's an easy task, so I ran it hard to redline multiple times (just 1-2 and 2-3 shifts) in Drive. Ok, maybe I "hypothetically" ran to redline in the 3-4 shift too. I did this for a couple days and I can attest that it really did make a difference. Even in downshift speed. He said that basically it teaches the computer that you want to shift aggressively and then it will apply those shift settings to "S" or paddle mode. It is supposed to hold those preferences until you drive easy in "Drive" mode for a while. He recommended that occasionally you get on it in Drive without using the paddles.

So, my feeling is that this did make a difference. It still is far from perfect, not a Ferrari paddle system. But it did make a SOTP difference. If you aren't happy with consistent paddle shifting, perhaps something to try!

Problem is, you drive "normally" for a few weeks, and the computer will also learn that, won't it?

According to his post, only if it is driven in D. Once the parameters are set, you can drive anyway you want in S, as the computer only learns in D.

Wow, just learned something. I never use D always S mode ...I guess I need to drop the hammer for the next few days in D so that my car can learn that I mean business when I push on the go pedal .

Yep... I drive with paddles almost all the time. So I just needed to "set" things properly in Drive, now I am back in paddle mode all the time. But yes, if you drive in D again for a few days easily, it will learn that too.

Great info. I always drive in "S". I am going to start hammering it in "D" for a while.

Thanks for the great info! That's probably my problem, I only nail it when I'm in S, which is most of the time. I drive it easy if I'm ever in D. I'll go out and nail it a bunch in D, then drive in S from then on like I normally do!

Thanks,
Glenn

This sounds similar to the "free air mod" and this could be the
"free paddle shift mod" rather than buying the "2008 Quicker shift times on paddle-shift six-speed automatic".

007, That sounds like a great "mod for free". Thanks for the info! That's what's so great about this forum. I will try it even though I had my trans "tuned" by my tuner along with the engine. I hope it enhances this "tune" as much as the method you describe has enhanced yours.
FYI, check out your post on your trans issue. I put more info on my trans status. Not good!

If this works I am going to be pissed! All the time I spent with tuners trying to speed up shifts via programming, and all I had to do was drive it in "D" hard for a while? Thanks for letting us know this information earlier GM.

I'm glad to help! But just remember, while it is a SOTP feel for me, it doesn't go from night to day. I really noticed a big difference in downshifts in my case. Although there are still moments of frustration when it doesn't respond exactly how I want. It's adaptive both ways... it to me and me to it.

But it definitely is worth a try.

I've been hammering the throttle in D since yesterday evening and I can't wait for the computer to learn what I want it to do!

The only weird thing is my gas mileage is starting to go down for some odd reason .

You guys need to try the paddles with TM removed. The difference is stunning.
