A6 shifter jammed up tonight

This morning, went and hooked up the batt, still the same, only N and D, NOW the car won't even start in N, just kind of goes dead, no clicks/sounds...nothing, I notice the check engine light on. Thinking the batt might be the problem, as it kind of does this when the batt does not have enough to start, I hook up the charger and go to work.
Stew over this all day, call my dealer who has a cool service dept, they find no specific TSB's, but feels it's either in the shifter somewhere or a problem in the trans....no no no please not the trans.
Get home and rip into the console (08 model coming from Gene anyway), take my time getting into the shifter and look over whats going on in there. There are a couple of micro switches...make sure the car is in N, close them both...car starts now but shifter still jammed, shut it down and start looking closely at the lockout pawl and solenoid, it APPEARS to be fine, not in a weird position, but its tight against the cam, real tight. I give it a little pry and presto the pawl and cam moves, and shifter frees up. Make sure it's in N, start it up and all is better. Somehow the pawl got overextended on the cam, but the cam has a detent here so it looks fine at first glance, I will try to get some pics and will try to duplicate the problem, I think I might have let off the brake while moving the shifter or something like that.
