Default Runflats - Why the poor performance?

Why do runflat tires perform more poorly than their non-runflat counterparts? For example, the GY F1 SC non-runflats on the C5 Z06 had relatively good dry performance, but the ones on the C6 Z51/Z06 are noticeably worse. Aren't stiffer sidewalls usually better for performance? Is the compound on runflat tires different?

I was under the impression that those tires used the same compound. Of course it may have been tweaked a bit over the years. But stiffer sidewalls are actually worse for performance. Add in the fact that the C6 uses 1'' larger wheels than the C5, making the sidewalls smaller, and the C5Z has another advantage.

I don't think they're that bad. The overall performance of the C5 Z06 (with non-EMT Supercar tires) and the C6 Z51 (with the EMT version of the same tire) is essentially the same, and I doubt that swapping the tires would make much difference.

Most of the complaints I've heard about the EMTs is that they're noisy, wear fast and are a bit numb feeling, not that they don't stick well. And of course that they're slippery when cold, but then they are summer tires!

I replaced the OEM EMTs on my C6 Z51 with Michelin PS2s, arguably[1] the best all-around performance tires available, and I'd say that the PS2s are a little stickier, a little easier to drive, and a lot quiter. I'm expecting about the same milage out of them.

[1] Okay, really arguable on an internet forum! But they've maintained one of the highest "I'd buy them again" ratings on Tire Rack's site for a long time.

Granted it was a somewhat banked turn, but when I have a max lateral G of 1.15 on the HUD, I can live with the other gripes about the runflats. They DO perform, these are the Z51 supercar tires. Needless to say I will need new tires soon. Will go with the runflats again. Plus the huge safety factor if you have a sudden blowout at speed is a big deal to me.

After burning through the OEM SC EMTs in 10K miles of street and autocross use, I tried a pair of Falken Azenis in front and a pair of Bridgestone RE050A (non-PolePosition) in back. Worst decision of my life - grip characteristics change differently for both tires, mostly unpredictably.

Now at 20K miles on the car, I just returned to the OEM SC EMTs all the way around and am once again very impressed with how good they are. WAY WAY superior to the old EMTs on the C5.

That's interesting. So you bought the best non-runflat tires ont he market and they are only marginally better than the OEM runflats?
