Check Engine light came on yesterday after filling up with gas.
I checked the gas cap and it is on correctly. IF it was the gas cap how long before the CE light goes out? If it dosen't go out do I need a scan tool to check codes or is there a magical mixture of button pushing that will reveal them on the DIC? Like the C5.
Just some other info I do have headers, hi flo cats, and a tune (done in May by Mike Norris )
There is no known way to reveal the codes as in the C5 without a scanner (must be a CAN enabled scanner as well).
I believe disconnecting the battery (10 - 20 minutes should do it) will clear the codes or if the problem is no longer there it might take as long as 30 run cycles to clear itself.
Many times headers do eventually bring on a code, a tuner can disable the test that causes the code which is what I ended doing to keep my CEL light off.
"30 run cycles" means like starting and shutting off the engine or 30 trips down the track?
Thanks for the info Miaugi.
Yes that is what 30 run cycles means...although I may not be quoting the correct number I know it is quite high and I think that each cycle must be a certain amount of time. Basically during each cycle the computer checks for problems, after a predetermined amount of checks with no repeat of the problem it clears the code, that is why disconnecting the battery is an easier method.
Of course pulling the code is the best method as then you know what you are dealing with. Lately I've seen a run of CEL's caused by defective CAGS eliminators.
Some of the lager autoparts stores will check/clear the codes for customers at no charge.
The only under warranty claim I've had so far on my '05 A4 Z51 is the gas cap. It displayed "Check Fuel Cap". Sure enough, it just spun around and wouldn't click to lock. Dealer replaced it on my lunch time and reset the code. So I know there is a specific display for this problem. Good Luck.
Kelly,
I got a real nice CAN OBD2 scanner for $129 on Amazon.com. Use it for both cars. Have checked and cleared codes on the '08 after LT headers and ported TB&intake added. Works great!
Good luck,
Mike
Thanks again for the info guys. I'm going to disconnect the battery and tomorrow have the code checked at a car show I'm going to.
Mike I'm thinking a scan tool could be very helpfull.
