I finally had a opportunity drive a M6 Z51. What a blast! I really enjoy the closer gear ratio vs. my standard '05 M6 (I assume 3:42 rear). I have plans for a DTE swap in the near future w/ hardened shafts and a new clutch upgrade.
With the recent discussion's on 3:90 gears, I'm wondering what would get me close to the feel of a M6 Z51 without going to 4:10's. I've read all the positive responses to the 4:10 results, but it would be too much with a Maggie. Comments?
This is almost an impossible question to answer, as the "feel" is totally subjective. Part of the "feel" is the closer ratio between gears, so that the RPMs don't drop as much when you shift. Unfortunately, no matter what ratio rear end you install, the relationship from gear to gear stays the same.
If you switch from the OEM 3.42:1 gears to a 3.73:1 gear, your RPMs will increase approximately 9% in each gear. Going to a 3.90:1 will increase RPMs by 14%, and a 4.11:1 will increase it by 20%.
Switching to driving my friend's C5Z06 at autox, it feels like a total DOG between first and second. I couldn't believe the spread between gears - the 'feel' of the spread - with the throttle pegged it felt like I was coming out of some corners at 1k rpm.
Rear gears make a car reach it's power region a lot quicker but it won't fix the gap between gears.
