After having my '06 in the dealership 4 times now for cruise control failure, I wanted to let everyone know that if you run into this issue that most likely it will be the control solenoid valve and transmission module ON the transmission that will most likely be the cause. Once this module sends a false signal it will lock out your cruise control input and render the cruise control useless until the dealership can reset. The valve body of the transmission is being replaced. Good thing this is still under warranty. But until this valve was replaced, the dealership kepted throwing parts at the problem instead of dealing with the whole system one time. Go figure.

I checked your profile, but couldn't tell if you had an auto or manual (or I need to get my eyes checked?).
In my manual I had a cruise control issue - it would stop working, or literally disable the feature as you had described. It would even occassionaly activate the check engine light (onstar let me know it was the cruise control, and not critical).
I discovered that it was the clutch pedal switch (for lack of a better description, the switch when the clutch pedal is not pressed), short about 1mm. Thus the cruise control would be intermittent.
FWIW, I live on the cruise control. Only way to keep from speeding....as soon as I get to speed, I apply it, thus using it almost all the time. No problem yet. It works perfectly, at 30 mph, or at much higher speeds... point is, it's a 2006 automatic, and I've not had one problem with it, and use it all the time.
