Default Hole in Diff. Casting

I found a small hole in my Diff. casting(small black spot above the fill plug in picture). It seems it is where a bolt hole was drilled to deep or drilled to close to the side of the casting. The bolt on the side of the differential comes in at 90 deg. from the hole. You can barely see it in the dark area.

I changed my diff fluid three months ago and don't remember seeing this. I;m sure I would have. I don't see any fluid, but it would probably only leak at speed and not when sitting due to the location of the hole. Think I would still find fluid if it went all the way through? Anyone think this is a problem?

Not a problem......if it were into the case, you would have a big oily mess...

I didn't think it was a problem, they wouldn't drill a bolt hole into a thin part of the casting, or at least I hope they wouldn't.I can actually see the bolt through the hole. Just hope it isn't that thin on the other side where the fluid is. I'm sure it isn't. You can actually see where they thickend the casting to the right of the hole. Probably just got drilled a little deep.

Diffs usually have a vent hole for the gases to escape as the unit heats up... This might be what you are seeing.. I will check mine when I do my oil change

If there is a vent, it should be on the very top of the diff. This is not. The closer I looked at it the more I could tell it was a piece of casting that "chipped" out because the bolt hole was drilled to deep or too close to the outside of the casting. The bolt does not enter where it is chipped but if I look real close I can see the base of the bolt in the hole. I would take a better picture but it is impossible to get me camera in there. You can clearly see(even in the blurry picture) where the casting was "built up" to allow for this bolt. It looks like they just went a little too deep, and I doubt that it is a critical area.

The vent is on the top, drivers side. Looks like a raised dime.
