Default Lifter noise

My '06 C6 with 23K on it has developed what sounds like a lifter ticking when I start it up. It does not happen as soon as you start the motor, but a second after it is running then goes away a few seconds after that, but the time it takes to go away is getting longer. Thought it might be a oil problem as I had 5K on this changing of Amsoil 5-30. I changed the oil and filter, reset the dummy meter and the noise went away. But it is back and I realize as long as I am careful at start ups and let it come upto pressure it will probably be ok. Any ideas? I search this webpage and found alot of similar issues, but no resolutions. I will take it into the dealership and let them do something, but I am sure they will point the finger at Amsoil, even though it ain't the oil!

all hydraulic lifters left on the nose of the cam after shut off will bleed down due to the spring pressures transfered to the lifter. Like you said after start up they tick for a monent and it's gone. That's normal. You may think it's taking longer to subside but most likely not. Now if you cam your motor you'll here what sounds like a sewing machine under your hood. It's not the lifers but actually the valves slaming shut on the down side of the cam, because of the aggressive ramp designs of these cams. So don't worry it's normal.

It's normal for GM. I also found that after an oil change it disappears for awhile. My other car (non-GM) doesn't do it.

I have excatly the same thing. I believe this to be normal. After an oil/filter change, the lifter noise does not occur on start up untill after another 2,000 -3,000 miles.

I had the same issue until I changed the oil to the Amsoil 0-30.

As mentioned above, it is normal. The viscosity of your oil makes a difference too. I also used Amsoil 0W-30 in a prior Vette and it had the side-effect of speeding the lifter fill process and cutting down on the "noise."

I thank everybody for their response. At least I can feel a little better now. I was running Amsoil 0-30 when it started (about 5 K on the oil) and the Ea oilfilter. Changed back to 5-30. It is just weird that it started at 23K miles and not before. I am going to take it in anyway as it is still under warranty and I have a couple of other issues that need addressed. Will let you folks know what I find.
