Well I did something today that I have not done in all my years of working on vehicles - I reused my oil filter after an oil change on the vette
I went to change my oil today at the auto hobby shop. I only have 1000 miles on her, but I am in the habit of changing all of my cars oil the first time between 500 and 1000 miles. I got my oil filter from the dealer and got my oil from Wally World. Pulled her up onto the lift, got her in the air, and removed the plug. Then I removed the oil filter (whose number I could not read because it was facing the engine). I didn't pay any attention to the number, just went to screw on the new one - won't screw on. Turns out I got a PF46 instead of the required PF48 - again
I have no one to blame but myself since I asked the dealer for the PF46 - neither one of us double checked. Bottom line is I was stuck at the hobby shop with a car out of oil and no way to get the correct filter...so...you guessed it, I cleaned up the old one, drained it and put it back on. Then I put about 5 1/2 qts of new oil in her and went to get the correct filter.
I guess I know what I am doing this weekend, changing the oil again... Boy do I feel dumb today!
If I were you I'd let it go this time or just get under the car and replace the filter and add a little more oil. There will be plenty more oil changes after this one
The original filter will be good for at least 8,000 miles (so would have been the oil), so no need to do anything except drive the car until the DIC asks you to change the oil.
Been there and done that one too! I definately wouldn't change the oil again but I would probably put the new filter on. My dad used to joke that he was going to start using the oil I drain from my cars in his cars because it was always clean and changed about 3-4 times more often then needed.
You mistake is better than not putting on a filter and driving away or putting a new filter on but leaving off the drain plug or not putting any oil in...
easily fixable if you feel it is necessary.

I agree. Don't sweat it. People get really excessively obsessed sometimes about this stuff.
