For all the C6 gurus, what would be the best camshaft to install, without a head change? Looking for good overall performance with the sound of the cam beating. Will have headers and high flow cats, x-pipe and my Borla Stingers.
The 228/232 cam is a proven choice, one of SpinMonsters' faves. It can be tuned for a decent idle, but for best idling characteristics, you might need to raise the idle speed. On an A6 with a stock TC, you could get some creep at stoplights.
There are a few alternatives. One is on the lift. At .586/.592, this is probably based on the Comp Cams X-ER fast-ramp lobe. The faster ramp speed allows the valve to open and close more quickly, yielding better idle quality for the same effective duration. However, this can also result in a little more valvetrain noise (sewing machine effect). Also, you might need stronger valvesprings, and your valvespring life could only be 20-25K miles.
By going to an XE lobe, your lift will be more like .560", your valvetrain noise will be lower, and spring life longer. You might lose a few ponies, but just a few.
For better idle quality and ability to pass emissions tests, you could consider a lower duration. The 224/224 grind is extremely popular, as is the 224/228. The former will give you slightly better idle and low-end, while the latter will have a slightly better top end.
You could also go to a wider LSA of 115 or 116, which would also help the idle and emissions characteristics.
These are all very common choices, but you should also consider some of the specialty grinds offered that are excellent for A6's. MTI offers a reverse split "stealth" grind on a 115 LSA that is quite good, and T J Wong has had excellent results with a 215/230 grind on a wide LSA.
Car idles a just little choppy so the idle was tweaked up a tad. Not annoying at all and I've gotten a few looks at stoplights from people who know what the sound means. I have the cam and headers and I'm at 400 RWHP.
