Many are available at a fair price (I think Wally World has them). Just be sure it supports OBDII CAN bus application.

Go to Autozone. They will do it for you - or let you use theirs to do it. Any Autozone should have a code reader you can use and not have to buy. Personally, I own one and think they are a great investment. That said, if all you want to do is clear a code, Autozon/Pepboys/Kragen's/ should all have one you can use for free.
Cheers.

I got a Snap On that does just about everything but, I'm sure you don't want the price tag on it either!

I bought an Innova 3100a from WalMart for under $100.00. Its a very comprehensive unit that comes with PC software for data logging and I believe is flash upgradable. It also provides code definitions (as opposed to having to look them up) as well as multiple codes and a few other features (one is called freeze frame). Its a CAN II unit.
The counter guy at one of the big auto parts chains recommended that I go to Walmart because the comparable unit that he sold was a good bit more.
Have used it a few times and am happy with it.

Codes No Engine Light?
I been having some trouble with the A6. Are codes set for the transmission even if the check engine light does not come on?

I bought on of the Innova models at Kragen. Can scan and clear codes and was about $60 or $70. I keep it and the code definition book in my glove box.
