im getting a message on my 05 c6 that says check gas cap i check it and everything loks ok i opened it and closed it back and it still says it..can it be the sensor of the cap?
I believe if you disconnect your battery will remove the light indicator.. The light will stay on forever before it resets itself. if there is something wrong the light will come back on. just make sure you get the cap on straight...
Also my buddy had a defective gas cap. The racheting mechanism goes south. As you turn it, it does not tighten and hence the pressure is not completing the requirement for the system.
He ordered the new gas cap and I haven't had anything since, bought it through Ecklers....Good Luck..
Check your gas cap. If the racheting mechanism is loose, then you probably need a new cap. This is a common problem.
If it feels OK, then reseat the cap and start and stop the engine at least 3 times. I think the original 2005 caps have a green o-ring seal and the newer style have a different color.

Do you smell any fuel in the car after fill up ? My 05 was doing the same thing. Ended up,I had a crack in the fuel tank at the top(filler). Dealership(and not the one I bought it from ) fixed it under warranty.
No problems since,Except I had to have my aftermarket exhaust realigned when I got it back.
Your dealer should check the cap. He can reset the light if there are no problems. Otherwise, it might take 50 cycles (according to my dealer as I had a loose cap last spring due senior moment) before the check engine light will clear itself. My original cap appears to be just fine as I have not had a repeat check engine light since.
