Default 08 tranny issues

hey guys my 08 z51 m6 has almost 600 miles on it and the tranny is starting to worry me. when cold it has a rough time going from first to second like many have had (sometimes grinds lightly).this goes away when it warms up but when i'm in first going slow or driving through parking lots the shifter feels like it wants to pop out of gear. finally when i get into it the first to second shift has a weird feel. I'm just wondering i anyone else is having the same issues? first GM not impressed so far

I did the Royal purple mod and it helped some but it still Is a little sluggish till it's warm.Really don't notice it much, but after a shortime it shifts great, much less clunky, less effort: and quicker than the 4 t-56's I've had.
That's what I notice more.

I only experience the cold notchy issue...
You should take it in and have it looked at.. I have not experienced any of those other issues... Good luck.

Its an issue, my 08 ( In sig) is terrible. The syncro isnt up to the task. Its been a common problem with all the 08s that I have seen come through here, and I can only chalk it up to issues with the new gear box (Tremec 6060) thats in all of the 08s.

if you ask me, you don't have enough miles on it yet. my trans changed a bit, and so did the shifting, after about 1500 miles.

but it can't hurt to take it in and at least create a record of your concerns.

If it helps any until the tranny warms up:

1. Shift at really low rpms around 1,200.
2. Someone mentioned double clutching and it actually works for going from 1st to 2nd. I tried going 2nd to 3rd double clutching, but doesn't really allivate for the small 2nd to 3rd grind/notchyness.

If you tranny is still hard to shift and grinding alot after it's warm, you might want to use the GM warranty (5year/100k). You can try changing fluids first and see the results before stepping in the dealership.

Remember that the engine being up to operating temperature doesn't necessarily mean the tranny is warmed up.

I have the same issue with my C5 trying to make fast 3-4 shifts until the TRANNY gets warmed up. Which means, time, hard driving or lots of shifts. It takes my car about two to three full laps on a road course to get it to stop grinding. My engine oil temps are already 240+ by that time.

My 08 shifted like butter, every gear, every time. Until the temps dropped into the low 40's and 30's. Then 1-2 was tough, it really wanted to grind 2nd. I started shifting 1-3 instead when it was cold, and that helped. Car is put away for the winter, but I'm doing the Royal Purple change soon. I would have the tranny looked at. Are you sure some of this isn't the skip shift thats causing some of the issue?

My '08 Z51 coupe w/1500 miles acts the same as the OP described. Once warmed up, it shifts fine, though I still always have to 'concentrate' more on making smooth shifts in the Vette then in my previous Cooper S, Porsche Boxster S or BMW M3. These other brands simply have more user-friendly and natural-feeling trannies/clutches.

I tried the 1st-to-3rd routine this morning, and it does indeed work to get past the first few initial miles when this seems to be a problem.

We can only hope that GM will eventually issue a TSB if enough '08 owners complain.

It wouldn't hurt to take it into the dealer and at least start a paper trail of the problem... have them throw it on the lift and inspect the fluid level. I've owned several cars where the tranny and diff fluid was low fresh off the lot.

robvuk has a good point. Your temp gauge tells you what the coolant is at, shortly after your oil temp comes up and it takes SEVERAL miles for the tranny temp to come up. I've personally monitored this on my 06 STI. I started with a cold engine and drove it down the highway on a 35 degree day. it took about 50 miles for the temp to stabilize. crazy huh? Just be patient in the cold (i know it's hard) and don't bend forks or blow syncros. (throw an old M22 rock crusher in there and be done with it)

I must have the ONLY good one. Mine shifts smooth cold, and even better after everything warms up. Never notchy or grinds going into gears.

I don't think it's the syncros, the GT 500's and Vipers had the same issue when it's cold. When it warms up it's fine. If it were the syncro I would think it would do it all the time.
I've had 3 Mustangs with tremec tranny's in them, all were hard to shift until the tranny fluid got warm. I think it's a tremec thing.
Also changing fluid can help the problem, use redline or something simular.
my 2 cents

Not trying to revive the already-beat-to-death 07-vs-08 argument, but if this is 'normal' for the T6060-- well... isn't this why they supposedly went to the new transmission in the 2008?

My 08 does this as well. I just skip second gear until the tranny is up to temp. I also double clutch all gears until the tranny comes up to temp. I have no issues doing both and when warm the tranny shifts PERFECTLY fine in all gears with no issues.

For one, it Holds more HP. It will get smoother with age.
I would not have purchased a 08 Vette if it didn't have the T-6060. I would have purchased a GT 500.
