One of the new pace cars is so equipped so that could be an experiment to gauge interest.......unfortunately they chose to paint the poor car in a color scheme with iridescent paint .....green to an ugly yellow color(s).......

Same cost per gallon with 2/3 the mileage. Sounds like a deal to me.

Its cheaper per gallon vs fossil fuel and your 2/3 the mileage is wrong also. Its not as efficient as gasoline but its not 2/3 either.

E85 has exactly .6668 the energy content of gasoline. The current wholesale price of E85 is 95% that of gasoline. This does not include the 50 cents a gallon federal subsidy currently afforded to ethanol. Even at todays higher gasoline prices E85 is a bad choice for auto fuel and this does not take into account the hidden costs of higher food prices caused by the increased demand for corn. Promoting ethanol as an auto fuel is one of the dumbest ideas to come from the congress and they have had plenty of practice at stupidity.

You are right 2/3 is not right, it's really 75,700/115,000 = 65.8%. 2/3 would be 66 2/3 %.

AL, is that you out there?

There I go exaggerating again. Yes, mileage is slightly better than 2/3 because of the 15% gasoline. Actual highway driving tests show mileage reductions of about 27% to 30% with driving range at about 0.6818181818181818181818181%.

The "average" retail price of E85 in the U.S. (with federal price supports) was $2.91 per gallon in August 2007.

Oh, and there is one more little, itty bitty minor point. According to Stanford and other testing facilities:

Ethanol vehicles pose a significant risk to human health, study finds. Ethanol is widely touted as an eco-friendly, clean-burning fuel. But if every vehicle in the United States ran on fuel made primarily from ethanol instead of pure gasoline, the number of respiratory-related deaths and hospitalizations would likely increase, according to a new study by Stanford University atmospheric scientist Mark Z. Jacobson. His findings are published in the April 18 online edition of the journal Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T).

"Ethanol is being promoted as a clean and renewable fuel that will reduce global warming and air pollution," said Jacobson, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering. "But our results show that a high blend of ethanol poses an equal or greater risk to public health than gasoline, which already causes significant health damage."

"We found that E85 vehicles reduce atmospheric levels of two carcinogens, benzene and butadiene, but increase two others—formaldehyde and acetaldehyde," Jacobson said. "As a result, cancer rates for E85 are likely to be similar to those for gasoline. However, in some parts of the country, E85 significantly increased ozone, a prime ingredient of smog."

Inhaling ozone—even at low levels—can decrease lung capacity, inflame lung tissue, worsen asthma and impair the body's immune system, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The World Health Organization estimates that 800,000 people die each year from ozone and other chemicals in smog.

"In our study, E85 increased ozone-related mortalities in the United States by about 200 deaths per year compared to gasoline, with about 120 of those deaths occurring in Los Angeles," Jacobson said. "These mortality rates represent an increase of about 4 percent in the U.S. and 9 percent in Los Angeles above the projected ozone-related death rates for gasoline-fueled vehicles in 2020."
