My 07 Trailblazer SS is equipped with a 4.10 rear axle and the LS2 395 hp Vette engine. The final drive ratio, with larger SS tires factored in, puts 4th gear in the 4 speed SS, almost equal to 4th gear in my 07 C6 with 2.56 rear axle. Final ratio for the SS is 3.10, to Vette 4th gear at 2.944.
Even carrying around an extra 1200 pounds the SS is very responsive in town at normal driving speeds without having to downshift.
If I use the paddle shift and stay in 4th gear the C6 responds very well at typical lower driving speeds also.
But, you have to manually downshift for lights and stop signs when using the paddles.
Is there an aftermarket switch that will prevent the automatic from shifting into 5th and 6th?
My Yukon had a towing selector switch that locked out 4th gear but still shifted normally through 3 gears.
I like the gas mileage I get on the highway in 6th gear but would like the option to stay in automatic mode in town without going into the tall 5th and 6th gears.
Maybe Chevy will make this an option in the future.
No switch, but you can get a transmission tune that changes the shift points so it does not go into 5th and 6th at such low speeds. In my opinion the stock upshift points are too low and the downshifts are too high. I'm sure it's set up for best fuel mileage. I changed my "S" mode shift points and left "D" stock. Now it stays in gear longer and downshifts sooner. It is much more responsive and feels stronger because it does not bog by being in a higher gear too early. You can basically change the shift points to anything you want with a tune or a tuner software package.
