Need Recommendation-Cordless or Cord Impact Wrench
Hi...I need an impact wrench for only and occcasionally removing the lug nuts on my C6. I just got BFG Drag Radials with C5 Z06 17x 9.5" wheels and about 10 times a year I will be removing my rear stock wheels in my garage and putting on the drag radials and visa versa same day I get back from the track. I got the Torin Lift Jack and Torin Jack Stands already.
I assume I need a 18 Volt and 1/2" model? How about an Electric Cord Model? So tell me your thoughts on what will work for me, price and where you bought it. I tried already, and my hand 1/2" rachet doesnt cut it removing my lug nuts.
Cordless impact wrenches are a joke. You're fooling yourself if you think you can use that accurately to 100 foot lbs for installation and removal.
Get a breaker bar - and a torque wrench to do this correctly.
but a cordless is great to run the nuts off and on,there are lots of choice here.Makita,Bosch,Dewalt and CTC here in Canada all make one among others. They are a great tool for smaller application, but do not be fooled with what they can do with a full charge, you will be surprised, .
I have a cTc one and we have used them on jobsites recently, they were on sale for 99 bucks and we bought 10.They did a very good job for us,I was skeptical in the beginning.
As far as I know there isn't a cordless impact wrench. There are electric impact wrenches. There a little hard to fined. Good luck.
everyone makes one and I think snap-on was one of the first with a 3/8 drive, for 300 bucks back then(1994).Most are now 1/2 inch drive and are a pretty good tool.

Cordless 1/2 impact guns are readily available and a bit pricey. Great for getting the lugs on and off but I would use a hand torque wrench for the final adjustment.

Yes there are plenty. Dewalt makes one that is 18V and has a max torque output of 300 ft./lbs. Model# DW059K-2. Not sure if you can adjust the torque on it though. Have seen it for 299.00

I ended up getting an electric impact gun as I too will only be zipping my rims off and on. Picked it up at Harbour Freight regularly $79 on sale for $39...you can't beat that price.

Sorry I didnt mention it, I do have a Torque Wrench....but I want to use the cordless or corded for getting them on and off and the TW for final tightening. My pal who is a Porsche racing mechanic uses a cordless and have yet to see him laughing at it.
Yup! It's good for up to 240 ft pds. I just checked and it's still on sale for $39.99, for what you want it for, you can't beat the price.
Hi...thanks for the tip!! Sears also has a Chicago 300 ft lbs for $229 but for $39.99, cant beat that price...thanks much!! Since I am going to be doing this in my garage, dont need cordless, can use the corded.
Thanks too Dennis!!
I do not use the impact for the initial loosening or the final torque. There is a chance of damaging chrome nuts with the hammering of the impact, far less chance with a torque wrench.

Don't waste your money. I've gone through three. Thought maybe the first one was just a fluke, second one didn't work from the get go and the third one works but is weak. They are lousy tools.
The dewalt just hammers away and chips away all the chrome on the lugs. Waste of $300.
Use a breaker bar to break loose the lugs and a torque wrench for final torque.
I still have a Dewalt and my 2 year old likes to help me zip the lugs on and off with it but it won't remove them when torqued. If you want to use something to zip the lugs on and off, get the Harbour Freight cordless 19 v one, I had one of those before Dewalt and it lasted a year and was actually better at breaking the lugs loose. Not a bad tool, just didn't last long.
My buddy as a 14v Snap on and it works great - but he's a tech and needs it. Not worth the $600 or whatever it costs.
Oh and don't buy a 1/2 adaptor for your cordless screwdriver - I used it for a couple of times to zip the lugs off, until the wheel cocked one time, the lug got stuck and the cordless screwdriver (18 Ryobi) stripped its transmission.

Hi Joe....did that Harbour Freight actually break loose the lugs all the time you used it? Also, what did you use as a breaker bar?
