Default A6 gears/tune question

Have a friend installing 3.15 gears on his otherwise stock A6 car. He will have to put about 350 miles on the gears before he can dyno tune, plus he will have to drive the car anyway to get to the tuner, which will be a 300 mile trip. Is it ok to drive the car with the 3.15 gears on the stock tune? What kind of behavior can he expect to encounter? Thanks for any info.

I think you need to tune right away. At least that is how they did it with my 3.15 install recently. It would be good to hear other opinions though.

When I did my gears, the only thing that the installer (RPM) had to do was retune the speedo/transy to recognize the new gears, and, at least with HP Tuner, it recalibrates the speedo and shift points to the 3.15 gear configuration.

The thing is the installer in this case doesnt do any kind of tuning, he has to drive the car to a tuner.

I think his shifting will be messed it up. The speedometer will also be messed up. But i see no reason why he wiuld't be able to drive the car to the tuner.

Why would driving the A6 untuned after a gear swap be any different than driving the old A4 untuned after a gear swap?

Because with the A6 you can do the shifting manually.

That being said, aside from maybe shifting in an odd spot or the speedo being off, I don't see how it would hurt.
