I've heard that CAI's shorten the life of the engine. Anyone have real facts whether this is true? I just ordered a Vararam so I'm hoping this was false info.

no way, if you don't install right and dirt gets past the filter yes
I have the Vararam for almost one year. Had to RTV the foam gasket in place to guarantee a good seal. The air scoop out front does scoop up lots of air and dirt. So, just keep a good check on it, clean it regularly, and look for any signs of dirt getting by.

My original foam was sliding around and I used RTV to glue it down also. Checked it again last weekend and it's sealed fine and trapping dirt on the scoop side.
It is true that if you drive your Corvette into a lake with a CAI on it then it will kill the motor.
But then again if you drove your Corvette into a lake WITHOUT a CAI on it it might still kill the motor anyway.

So if you drove through 3" of water at 40 mph, would your aftermarket CAI allow water ingestion?

It's very possible yes but still not probable...now 6" of water at 50+mph well that's different LOL.
