I have a 08 A6 and my question is what gear the transmission starts in if I am not in “S” mode.
If I pull up to a stop, move the selector to “S” and bump the downshift paddle, I distinctly feel the tranny downshift which leads me to believe that at an “easy” start, the transmission is in 2nd.
If still in doubt, watch the tach as you slowly accelerate from a dead stop to 60 mph. Count how many times the rpms fall off on the tach.
Watch closely because the first one will be at approximately 8 mph.
Ok. I found my issue. If you start from a dead stop in either D or S (no paddle) the A6 shifts through all 6 gears.
When you come to a "rolling" stop, above 6mph, the A6 doesn't always down shift to 1st. In these situations, moving the selector to S and hitting the paddle will downshift to 1st.
My senses were telling me I was stopped at the intersection but in reality, I was still rolling.
