Alright trying to decide on a fire system. Which is better to go with, foam or halon? Anyone have any comments on the plusses and minuses with each? Seems like foam is cheapest.
I was not aware that Halon was still offered. You may also want to investigate Halotron 1. Very expensive, but very much worth it. Only know of one retail supplier. You may want to check further for yor application (race vs. street). It will definitely be Halotron 1 for my Vette.
Specifications: The primary extinguishing mechanism of Halotron 1 is the absorption and removal of heat from the combustion zone. To a much lesser extent, the extinguishing mechanism is the displacement of oxygen from the combustion zone. Approved for use in temperatures ranging from -40°F (-40°C) to 120°F (49°C). Electronically non-conductive units won’t cause thermoshock to your sensitive electrical equipment. Recommended uses: delicate electrical equipment, computers, vehicles, boats, aircraft, laboratories and more.
No thermal shock to electronics
No mess or damage to vehicle or surfaces
Liquefied gas extinguishes hard-to-reach fires
Does not impair operator's vision
EPA approved
Listed and rated 2B:C by Underwriters Laboratories
Hand-held Halon 1211 fire extinguishers are required on commercial transport aircraft, and for good reason. Although classified a "liquid streaming agent," Halon 1211 also performs remarkably well as a "total flooding agent," seeking out and extinguishing fires in inaccessible places. A 6-year maintenance and 12-year hydrostatic test are required.
Rugged steel cylinder¹ and all metal valve construction for exceptional durability
Pressure gauge enables easy confirmation of charge
Tested to ANSI/UL 711 and UL 1093²
Meets DOT requirements
Meets the requirements in Advisory Circular 20-42C , "Hand Held Extinguishers for
Aircraft" and/or NFPA 408, "Standard for Aircraft Hand Portable Fire Extinguishers"

OK I'll bite, why do you need a fire system? I've had corvettes since 1967 and never felt I needed a fire system. And not one ever had a fire on board. The only time I had a fire system was in my race car.( drove a C production Z car in SCCA for 10 years) There It was mandatory. Why do you think you need one on the street? The chances of your C6 igniting are slim to none. I would spend my money somewhere else. Just my opinion.

What makes you think this is a street car?
This is a full race car, so its going to be mandatory. Not to mention the added safety while racing is a plus.
Defintely want a built in system, there are alot of choices out there and was just hoping someone had some experience with them.

Where In your opening thread did you state it was a race car ? You need to give people just a little more info. Most cars on this thread are street cars not race cars. Didn't mean to offend you. Good luck with your "full race car". I'm sure you'll find a system that works well for you.
Heh even if it wasn't a race car I don't see how a fire system could be a bad thing. With fuel lines going through the engine bay connected to boost pumps on high horespower cars, it would be a smart idea to be able to put out a fire in seconds. Without any damage to the car.
Hey Folks,
I have to admit I have a portable fire extinguisher in every one of my vehicles and would not own one without. I may not need it but the guy who does have a fire may need it. I also have a spare tire and a first aid kit as well. I must be weird or something.

Spare tire, in your corvette? Was that an aftermarket addon?

They have 3 types of systems offered, all approved for most race sanctioning bodies. We have used their systems for years,,,, even in one race car fire.
I have insurance, but if you've ever been unfortunate enough to watch a car burn without a way to stop it...even once, you will always carry an extinguisher.

My GF and I stood helpless while her new Cutlass burned till the tires popped. I felt totally clueless as she pleaded for me to do something to stop it. Not a good day
Hey ProgGod,
You may also want to check out Fire Fight Fire Extinguishers for an "Under the Hood" System. They are out of Melbourne, FL Web site at www.FireFight1.com Never used them myself, but saw advertisement for system in Hemmings Classic Cars.
