Default Brighter Fog Light Bulbs

Anyone put a 60-65 watt bulb in the fog light with good results and no problem?

the stock is 42w

the dealers parts section says more watts will melt the housing so they want to sell me HID's for $250, but my thoughts are

1. HID's are cooler
2. but initial start up requires a lot more amps, the stock wiring is not meant for HID's

thoughts???

hid is the way to go! it will use about 12-15 amp at start-up (about 5-7 sec.) then draw about 5 amp. A 55 watts bulb will use about 15 amp, so hid will use less over all. your stock wire will do, I have them over a year & still works great! if you want you could add a wire harnes that tap to the batt.

You are more than likely going to need new wiring in order for the HID's to jump the gap (sort of like a spark plug gap) they need 12'000 to 15,000 amps. You need a converter (sort of like an ignition coil which takes the stock battery's 600-800 amps and turns it into 15,000 amps) and it should come with new wiring get the kit I have seen many a mechanic botch this job up by not spending the extra $ on the whole kit.

What's this converter you talk about?

HID Kits come with a ballast.
I don't think you can run 12V into a xenon bulb and make it work?!?
It is true that most of the time you need to run new thicker guage wires along with a relay pack so you don't melt your stock wires.

You mean volts not amps. To convert regular incandecent lamps with HIDs (such as your fog lamps) requires a ballast which will step up the voltage required by the lamps. Conversion kits are available that come with the bulbs and correct ballast. When replacing HID lamps, always make sure that bulbs are equivalent with the ones you are replacing because a HID lamp must be matched to its ballast.

A 55 watt bulb uses less than 5 amps, not 15. Ohm's law: watts = volts x amps. 55 divided by 12 = 4.6 amps.

Exactly. The HIDs will use less wattage overall and will not overheat the stock wiring. The ballast transforms 12V to 25,000V. 60-65 watt halogen bulbs will overheat the wiring.
