Washable/reusable.
No need for K&N filter element.
Not difficult to R&R ... one latch on each side of unit.

The latches are fine, but, you'll also have to loosen the top clamps too in order to get the filter out. Just wash it with soap & water, let it air dry & mist very lightly with a little bit of WD40 towards the outside before reassembly.

WD40? Is that what's recommended?

It comes with the green filter. That's all you need. Don't buy a K&N.

Search for a post by Joe G. He found a K&N replacement filter for the Vararam. Some people like to change filters instead of cleaning them...to each his own. Just another option for you.

Yes. I spoke to Steve from Vararam and to my surprise he recommended a very light coat of WD-40. I read somewhere that if you use too much WD-40, you can eventually throw a code as it comes downstream off the filter and coats the elements in the MAF sensor. I will probably check my MAF once a year to inspect the elements. Steve also recommended taking the entire Vararam out to clean the filter. It is only two extra torx bolts in the front. I thought this would be too much trouble. But I have found after 3 filter cleanings, it is much easier for me to reassemble the filter into the Vararam and check the seals and alignment while the whole thing is out of the car. Then, I just reinstall the Vararam as one unit. Works for me.

Not owning one of these (and not trying to hijack the thread) is this "green filter" the same make as the Green High Performance Air Filter? (see: http://www.greenfilterusa.com/)

thanks.

The green filter that comes with the Vararam is excellent. No need to buy any other filter that I know of.

There is a wide opinion here. I checked it at 3000 miles and it was pretty dirty. Then more than one person on this forum said that it only needed to be cleaned every 10,000 miles. That is way too many miles for me. I suppose it may depend on where you live, and the type of driving you do. Mine is a daily driver. I'm on the interstate in Colorado, where it is often windy with blowing dirt. 3000 miles is my answer and I'm sticking to it!

Same here, Steve at Vararam recommended after cleaning the filter
a light spray of WD40. No problems.

Im not sure about spraying the filter with oil. After all its not a lawnmower or chainsaw. Most importantly is to check for gap forming around the perimeter of the filter. I worry about oil & the maf. Also
the oil may make the filter more restrictive.

What's the oils main purpose? To keep the filter from drying out completely or something?

I know a local LS1 tuner who doesn't recommend to re-oil a filter after cleaning just because of the possible MAF contamination.

I'm skeptical about spraying WD40 on my filter. It may well be ok and recommended by the vendor, but something just doesn't seem right to me. Then again I don't know sh*t. In either case I've always liked buying a new filter as opposed to cleaning the old one. I'm concerned I'll put too much oil in it.

A legit concern, Kobun, since many have. But if you do it carefully, and judiciously, and let it dry for a full afternoon (outside but not in direct sun) and even overnight, there are no concerns.

As to the oil thing, while I wouldn't have initially thought of WD40 (kinda thin if you ask me) if Vararam sez so.....

Still, Green filters aren't different in concept from K&N, and K&N has its own "kit" of cleaner and oil. The oil is thicker (than WD40) and goes on easily. The reason for the oil is to lightly saturate the gauze material, thus making it more likely to catch and have dirt, dust, sand, etc. stick to it. Same theory/practice with the Green filter.

If it were me, I'd buy the Green filter's kit to clean and oil, but that's just me.

i checked my filter yesterday for the first time, and the thing was white??? is the "green" filter green or white?? is it green due to the filter, or from the oil like the K&n's??

I'd like to know, since pep boys is having a sale on K&N filters, and i'll get if this thing is paper, or if someone just cleaned it till it was white and didn't re oil it with the green oil.

So, shoot me. I already had a K&N cleaner/oil kit (used on another car). I put red oil on the green filter............. looks horrible Works great I'm sure its fine, just that the Vararam people don't want to promote K&N products. If they didn't want me to use the competitors product, they should have thrown a kit in the box (for that kind of money).
