Default Tune required with Ported Intake and TB?

I'm planning to port out my intake manifold and throttle body, most possibly with Cartek. However, I have enough mod funds to just do that. Is it necessary to do a full dyno tune? What I'm asking is, is it safe to run a couple thousand (say 6000) miles without a full dyno tune?

My supporting mods are the Vararam, Bullets exhaust, 160stat and a basic file tune (the TM and spark/timing one) from Cartek.

Any time you touch the intake side, you should get a tune if possible... Even a ported throttle body will lean you out considerably.

Tune is always recommended. That said I didn't tune after ported intake for a while and it was fine. I'm not a fan of the ported throttle body, I needed to tune after getting it (car was dying) and I don't think it added anything so not worth it to me. Ported intake does add about 10 rwhp and sotp feel, so that is recommended. Ls2portworks.com, CORY, is great to deal with and does good work.

Joe_G,

How long have did you have no tune with the ported intake?

So if I just port the intake, I should be okay for a while?

It really depends, as long as its not putting your car too lean you should be ok. If you have had a tune before then its more likely to be a problem, since your ratios would already be put to the leanest. I would wait, the extra 10hp, probably not worth it if your not tuning the car.

I'm going to call Cartek and ask them, because since i've gotten a file tune from them before, maybe they can just do a complimentary file tune to just make sure things are on the safe side after they do the porting for me.

Several months. Your car can correct up to 24% or maybe 20% and will throw a check engine light of it goes over, if that happens don't drive it!

But I am pretty darn sure that won't happen. A CAI does more to change airflow than the ported intake. A ported tb can change idle tune. But bottom line I didn't tune mine for months with the ported intake without a problem. YRMV.

When I got my L76 ported from Cory Harris the scans which were dead on for my tune walked 2-3% positive. That coincides with the reported 10hp or so people get with it. He has it documented with several users. I was pretty surprised at the power difference. It really turned my car's performance around when I at first couldnt get the L92/LS3 heads to wake up.

On a side note, because of the difference in performance from the porting of the stocker, I would be willing to bet that the LS3 FAST will raise the bar quite a bit from current LS power levels. Tuners now seeing 505-515 with these heads will be seeing a 20rwhp jump and a bigger jump in the midband. The L76's keep the flow numbers down from what the heads can do.

I would get the tune at every point in the mod chain (I tune my own car after all changes and even tweak it monthly) but if it were a tighter money situation, it can wait for additional mods to cut donw the costs in the end zone.
