Pissed. Exhaust sound thread...
Today I saw a new Pontiac GXP V-8. That's the 5.3 liter, LSsomething engine.
It was idleing at a curb. It sounds way WAY better than any C6 'Vette I've ever heard. This annoys me. Why is the 'Vette the application in which a Gen III V-8 Sounds the worst??
I need to start fabricating to solve this mystery.

I made the same comment to the salesman when I got my car about one of those convertable trucks they used to sell. Then they introduced me to a cat back exhaust they sold. Not sure if they still sell it or not it was the very loud please ticket me version.

I know that sound is subjective. I'm also aware that the sound of an engine is dependant upon a lot of things like valve timing, camshaft duration, firing order, etc., I just wished my Vette sounded as good when I got it as my 07 Denali with a 6.2 Vortec engine does.

No, the sonud is NOT in the vette...the c5 and c6 corvettes sound like pure *** no matter what you do to them compared to other applications.
It will always sound more high-toned that I would like and wont have the deep throaty tone of other V8s....it's a fact I've had to deal with.
I went with borla stingers....eh, it's the best we've got for a good sound.
And yes, I've heard plenty of cammed C6s at the track....still dont sound as good as I would like.
My dad and I literally thought a dirtbike was blasting by us on the road one day...turned out it was a cammed C6 (puke)

Do I need to? You know...because sound is so subjective. What a lame post. Of course I can't prove it. In this case however, my OPINION is proof enough. I don't like it. I liked the sound of my 380 hp, '86 Camaro before the 'Vette. And my Trans Am(s) before that. And my friends '88 'Stang. Hell, even my Girlfriends 3 liter V6 Dodge Stealth RT/Twin Turbo has a more melodious sound than the C6.
Don't worry though: my opinion on the sound character and quality of the late 'Vette doesn't threaten your right to like it. So don't post if you don't agree.
Objective data notwithstanding, many, MANY poeple (basically the folks who will ADMIT IT) agree that the sound character and quality that comes from a late 'Vette isn't good. After market cat backs don't change the character and quality; just the volume -for the most part.
Bench marks for great sounding exhausts are:
'86 and newer Mustangs
'83 and newer F-bods
Late GTO's
Anything from Chrysler w/a late HEMI in it.
Most GM trucks with any kind of decent exhaust
The above mentioned GXP V-8 and of course its brother the Monte Carlo SS V-8 (same paltform and engine).
My Jeep Wrangler w/a 350, outside-the-frame-headers, cross pipe, Dynomax Bullets, and turn outs. This is automotive music. The 'Vette is Dead-pan.
FYI: I've had stock, Corsa Sports, None (turn downs after the H-pipe), and GHL (the best so far). Still, the character and quality of the sound remains lame.
Blaaaaa-Blaaaaa-Blaaaaa-Blaaaaa-Blaaaaa-Blaaaaa-Blaaaaa-Blaaaaa-
instead of a nice, rolling
la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

Could be like "dumb ***" or "nice ***." Equally useful but hardly interchangable.

The problem with corvettes is that they sound too exotic for being an american sports car.
With a cam they just sound very rattly/raspy.
The problem is trying to tell that to other corvette owners though, lol.
My other buddies are quick to let me know just how surprised they are at how exotic it sounds...even with stingers on it.

Ok...I may have been a little harsh earlier saying they sound like ***, lol.
But they certainly dont ever sound like I would like them to sound...deep and agressive.
You can get loud...but you can't get the tonality.

I agree, the oem exhaust is a joke. A vacume cleaner sounds meaner!
However, my APS 3" exhaust with a cam installed sounds pretty bad a$$ and has a nice chop/low rumble sound on the LS2. I've had several comments on the sound.
